As a CFO or Finance Director, you can't be an expert in everything, and contrary to popular belief, nobody expects you to be! The key, however, is hiring great people around you who complement your skill sets which enables you to focus on making the greatest impact. The worst-case scenario for everyone is when you have a highly talented commercial CFO spending their time on accounting - in that scenario, you end up with an overpaid, and let's be honest, average technical accountant.

Yesterday I caught up with an experienced Finance Director who Reed placed previously with an SME in Suffolk. Personal circumstances mean they can now really consider their next job in terms of what is best for them as a person and their family as opposed to focusing only on their ‘career’. They have family abroad and would like the chance to see them more (absolutely shocking I know!). We discussed 3 general viable options for them: 1. A similar permanent Finance Director (or similar) for a company with turnover up to around £30m. 2. Interim and contract assignments of 3-12 months, allowing flexibility when contracts finish to travel. 3. Take a ‘step down’ in title, level of responsibility (and yes, salary) to say Finance Manager or Management Accountant. I think sometimes the flexibility shown above can be viewed with suspicion and I understand to an extent. For senior roles, do they still have the drive required? For less senior role, are they really be happy to get stuck in and take the lower salary? Knowing this person as I do, I have zero doubt either option would be even a slight issue. If you are a business in Suffolk recruiting a role that seems to fit the criteria above I’d love the chance to discuss their suitability.

Accountancy & Finance Recruitment Consultant at CMA Recruitment Group. Specialising in ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified Management Accountant, Financial Accountant, Finance Manager and business partnering appointments.
I've been recruiting qualified finance positions in Dorset for over five years now. With the market proving more competitive for candidates, I wanted to offer an interview tip which is solely focussed on you. You need to be able to articulate the value you add to employers in addition to your previous achievements. This is especially apparent when interviewing for Finance Manager / Financial Controller positions where at this seniority, it's expected that will be able to complete all required accounting tasks. What differentiates you from your competition is you value add proposition. This can be in many forms, be it systems & process improvement, commercial analysis & financial modelling or by providing a strong technical accounting skill set to aide with control & compliance. Be clear on where you add value to a prospective employer.

This is Katryn, she’s saved REKKI £110k a year How? Kat leads our finance team. Whilst it is obvious that a finance team oversees expenditure by all other departments, today’s finance leaders also need to get their own team in shape. And that’s exactly what she did. Kat looked at every repetitive process such as issuing customer invoices, incoming invoices, reconciliations, payroll etc and automated them. The result? Manual processing tasks are down 80% from 150 monthly hours to 30. Top bookkeeping tasks that were automated: • Issuing sales invoices - 44 hr/mth reduced to 7 • Processing purchase invoices - 80 hr/mth reduced to 18 • Reconciling payments - 20 hr/mth reduced to 4 The finance team went from being overstretched to having extra capacity, giving them space to upskill and lead revenue driving initiatives. As a finance leader, taking charge over your own budget is not only leading by example but it can actually go a long way into impacting your bottom line. Kat, I couldn’t ask for a better thought partner than you!
