This Black History Month, if you are looking for Black creatives to support, consider supporting my latest film project, The Off-Brands! As a fan of the teen movie/coming-of-age genre I felt like they didn’t reflect what my upbringing was like, especially coming-of-age in the Deep South. So, as a filmmaker I decided to change that. THE OFF-BRANDS is a coming-of-age comedy that follows Constance McKinney, a quirky teenager who tries to become recognized in her small town's high school for anything other than being sick. The film provides a diverse and inclusive community with an opportunity to find thrill, nostalgia, hope, and visibility through both the plot and its characters. By showcasing underrepresented communities - people with disabilities, Black southern culture, and Y2K - The Off-Brands has met its moment, and the themes and stories woven through it are ready to enter the public imagination. https://lnkd.in/eRjAAuKw Though we were able to shoot the film, but we still need the help of our community to bring this project to a screen near you: We are raising $12,500 in finishing funds to help us complete post-production for the proof of concept and ultimately get us into the BLACK. Our stretch goals include: $15,000 - This goal will satisfy all outstanding pre-production and principal photography debts. It will also take care of all post-production costs. $20,000- This goal will allow us to pay our above-the-line crew (producers, director, writer, etc.) who volunteered their talents towards making this project happen. $25,000 - This goal will allow us to pay our below-the-line crew for their prep days, travel, and overtime. HAPPENING IN THE VINEYARD LOUNGE: Black Representation in Film and TV Movies and television are often an escape from and a reflection of life unfolding. They also can play an outsize role in shaping and reinforcing cultural beliefs and attitudes about race, both in the United States and internationally. However, Black talent remains underrepresented in the TV and film industry both on and off screen. In fact, McKinsey & Company found that this lack of representing is costing the industry $10B annually. While progress has been made with regards to talent diversity in the film industry in recent years inequity is deeply entrenched across the film and TV ecosystem. Join us for a discussion on the challenges that Black talent in the film and TV industry face, and the opportunities to create a more inclusive, equitable industry.

It’s Black History Month!  While we at BSI support this month of “celebration" - we remind the industry to forge ahead with equitable actions at all times, across the year. Black Owned Media is a moral imperative with critical business impact. FINDING YOUR VOICE AS A BLACK ARTIST ⬇ In the dynamic landscape of the entertainment industry, finding your voice and establishing your presence as a Black performer can feel like navigating uncharted territory. Whilst the life of an actor/dancer/model/singer is a beautiful creative journey, it is without a doubt marked by glass ceilings and token-hiring, and the relentless pursuit of authenticity amidst the valleys of expectations and stereotypes. Through the power of personal branding, you can learn to establish yourself as a Black artist and truly learn the importance of finding one's voice. Embracing your authenticity isn't just about showcasing your talents on Social Media; it's more often about trusting yourself as an artist and reclaiming your narrative (which, yes, can feel like challenging the status quo!) Whether it's through breaking stereotypes, embracing cultural heritage, or championing diverse narratives, each step we take as Black performers is a statement of our resilience and empowerment. In a world where representation matters more than ever, it is crucial for Black performers to carve out their own paths. By owning our narratives and amplifying our voices, we not only pave the way for future generations but also redefine the standards of excellence in the industry.

Tray Kearney: Visionary and CEO of New You Nation Network I am Tray Kearney, and my journey has brought me full circle, having faced tough times and an uphill battle stemming from one pivotal decision. I often share, "One poor choice will change the trajectory of your life and have you take the long way home," and I joke about being the prodigal daughter. Music and entertainment have always been my first love. I do not regret my journey; I believe it was meant to be. I finally understand my God-given purpose: to serve the people that God assigned to me through my gifts, talents, and experiences. My vision for the New You Nation Network is to revive black excellence in media, resisting industry pressure to entertain through negative images of black people for profit. I am determined to counter the negative depictions of black people in the media, highlighting the truth of black excellence. Entertainment should not come at the expense of tarnishing the legacy of black culture, which is currently in a state of emergency. We must reclaim our power and showcase the true essence of black culture. It’s time that we call for originality in the music industry, criticizing the prevalence of carbon copies and the exploitation of young women. Industry veterans should speak up and prioritize talent over popularity and exploitation. My vision for the New You Nation Network is to heal entertainment through content that highlights real talent, is entertaining but not vulgar, and balances between being wholesome and extreme. The industry has become overly focused on "sex sells," and explicit content belongs in its proper place. The New You Nation Network aims to share music and entertainment based on talent and education—edutainment. It caters to those who are tired of twerking, cursing, messiness, and filth. Our network is an entertainment empire creating content for Generation X by Generation X, establishing a blueprint for other generations, and leaving a positive legacy for the future. I look forward to partnering with those who share the same morals, values, and integrity that the industry desperately needs.
