Thanks MCE-great blog post! Kids going into transition years that involve change in their routine (like starting middle school, moving to an new town etc) gain the chance to practice helpful skills while at camp without even realizing it. Gaining confidence, building reliance, making new friends to name a few.
Kids are back to school and those who spent time at Maine Camps come with many great attributes. Read this week's MCE blog about how students who were campers bring confidence, resilience, interest in community, and more: https://lnkd.in/eN8zbsJa #mainecamps #backtoschool #confidence #resilience Research & enroll for summer '25!

Agreeing with Highlights For Children's CEO on the importance of quality childcare (I added "quality" because not all childcare is created equal) and early learning. But that's not enough to make the change he speaks of. Studies have shown for decades that the gains for children enrolled in preschool programs such as Head Start largely disappear by age 8. That is NOT an argument for doing away with those programs -- they confer benefits beyond school readiness skills. The problem is that education has become a competitive sport. Quality childcare and early learning do not change that. Mr. Johnson's argument -- that quality childcare and early learning somehow create an even playing field on which no child is left behind (where have we heard THAT before?) -- goes all the way back to Thomas Jefferson, who declared public education "the Great Equalizer." But there is no magical world in which all children have the same privileges or the same resources. Even if there were, the nature of the game that is 21st century education is competition -- it's a feature, not a bug. And it's not only children from disadvantaged backgrounds who feel the pressure -- even Ivy-bound students whose parents sent them to the best preschools in the country worry that they won't be able to keep up. It isn't a dearth of quality childcare and early learning that is causing increasing numbers of students in countries such as Japan and India to commit suicide when they miss the academic mark. If you want children to stop worrying about being able to keep up with their classmates, you have to do more than provide quality childcare and early learning. You have to address the education system that they will spend 15-20 years of their lives in. You have to somehow get rid of the terrible meritocratic, performative, corporate model it is based on. This model not only treats education as a commodity, it treats students themselves as commodities. I don't think I am exaggerating when I say that this mindset is obscene. So let's start by valuing children for simply being the young humans that they are, rather than teaching them that their worth is tied to their performance on tests in school. Let's provide them with early education not because it will get them into a good college and then a good job (a premise that Generations X, Y, and Z would take issue with), but because children are young humans and education is a human right. And along the way, subscribe them to Highlights. It's still an awesome magazine. #earlychildhoodeducation #alternativeeducation #highlightsforchildren #earlylearning
"Instead of looking forward to the first day of school, millions across the U.S. worry they won’t be able to keep up with their classmates. But child care and early learning can change that." Highlights is a proud supporter of Save the Children US's Make Summer Fair campaign. This important program provides resources to kids over the summer. You can support their work by emailing Congress in support of early childhood education. Big thanks to Kent Johnson and Highlights for Children for supporting our campaign and speaking out about why investment in early childhood development is so important. This is relevant to all of us but particularly needed across rural America. Families in rural America have far less access to licensed, center-based childcare than do families living in non-rural areas. In non-rural communities, each child lives within a 10-mile driving distance of, on average, 1.3 childcare centers. In contrast, each child in rural America lives within a 10-mile driving distance of only 0.04 childcare centers. These statistics include center-based, school-based, and religious facility-based childcare facilities including Head Start. You can help. Use the link below to ask Congress for investments in support of early childhood education.

The research tells us that having books at home stops summer learning loss AND that children in under-resourced communities have fewer books at home. ALL children deserve to have access to books and reading, and at Books Are Wings, we're working to build the libraries of young readers across Rhode Island. "Prioritizing learning as a year-round commitment, and implementing programs that support summer learning, limit summer learning loss, which in turn reduces the achievement gap." (BU Journal of Graduate Studies in Education, Volume 14, Issue 2, 2022) You can have a big impact in the life of a child this summer by supporting our Stop the Summer Slide Campaign.
