Two consecutive panels at ASEBIO Investor day 2024 highlighted the opportunities and challenges that alternative and main markets offer to companies and investors. This was an opportune reflection to complement the pitch of so many young and vibrant companies of the Spanish Biotech ecosystem

📢 Genopole launches the European project #APROVALS for the deployment and integration of new technologies developed in cellular agriculture. The project kick-off took place today with project partners Cluster Campania Bioscience, EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries, Irish Bioeconomy Foundation, PlanetBio, SmiLe Venture Hub, Vitagora, TEKNOLOGIAN TUTKIMUSKESKUS VTT OY, with the following objectives for the day: 〰️ Build a strong foundation for collaboration between partners in the APROVALS project. 〰️ Engage in collective reflection to define the sandbox framework and technological focus areas. 〰️ Establish a concrete roadmap for the first year, outlining steps for use case selection, virtual experimentation, and stakeholder engagement. Good news! A bit of 🍍🍹though 🙂 The biosolutions sector is developing rapidly in Europe. That's why DI - Dansk Industri has decided to further enhance our strategic efforts, as we need to deliver a greener, more sustainable, more resilient and more competitive future for Europe. We will therefore allocate more resources and consolidate the joint efforts in one Unit Called DI Biosolutions. I will be director for the unit. The Danish effort in DI Bio will continue under Mikael Wraae Valsted, just as the European effort in the European Biosolutions Coalition where DI is the co-founder and partner and where I am seconded by Marit Hvithamar Rystrøm. I will continue as director for the Coalition as well. I am very excited that DI is now giving the biosolutions sector an even stronger voice. There is so much to gain by working across the efforts in Denmark and the EU, and now is the time to work on all levels to seize the solutions developed by biosolutions companies and put them into play in Europe. One dominant challenge many cellular-agriculture companies face is access to the single EU market. Various European policies and legislation directly affect the way their new processes and products are evaluated. Because of the complexity and size of these challenges, a collaborative approach is crucial. We are therefore very excited to the part of the new #APROVALS project. Here we will take an active role to collect concerns, opinions and strategic ways forward from cell-ag companies and experts in the field. These finding will then be collectively brought to EU policy makers through policy recommendations and other advocacy activities. We are very much looking forward to be working with the great consortium (Cluster Campania Bioscience, EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries, Irish Bioeconomy Foundation, Genopole, SmiLe Venture Hub, VITAGORA POLE, TEKNOLOGIAN TUTKIMUSKESKUS VTT OY) and all relevant stakeholders. The future looks bright! Yesterday DanishBio hosted a fantastic event where the Danish biotech ecosystem came together to celebrate excellence in the industry. We celebrated talent with a Rising Star award. We celebrated leadership with a CEO of the Year award. We celebrated vision with a Lifetime Achievement award. We celebrated success with a Company of the Year award. Recognizing talent and leadership is crucial because it provides role models for us to admire and learn from. Equally important is celebrating vision and success, as they represent the culmination of long, challenging journeys. Many embark on these paths, but few see their visions come to fruition. Biology and life sciences hold potential far beyond healthcare and medicine. They are likely key to a successful green transition through environmental biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, and various forms of biofuels and biomaterials. There are numerous opportunities in these future industries and Denmark appear to have a pole position, but significant capital is need. While the political climate appears to be improving, the ecosystem still requires substantial investment. Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming Minister for Industry, Business, and Financial Affairs, Morten Bødskov, to Gubra! Thank you for taking the time to engage with us in a meaningful discussion about the essential role biotech companies like Gubra play in Denmark’s thriving Life Sciences ecosystem. We explored some of the compelling reasons for ensuring continued access to highly skilled talent — both recent STEM graduates from Danish universities as well as international experts. Their expertise fuels innovation and advances our shared vision of Denmark as a global leader in biotech and pharma. Gubra is now a publicly listed company and has been around for 16 years, but for many new biotech start-ups access to risk capital is vital for survival in the early years.
