I've been doing a lot of thinking about the state of the tech industry this week. I've had some 1:1 coffee chats with fellow practitioners and, it probably comes as no surprise that there is a melancholy that surrounds the tech industry today for UX and UXR folks. Years of layoff culture, fighting for a seat at the table, and the introduction of AI has left practitioners feeling drained, and skeptical about the perceived value of their disciplines. The world continues to feel (very) overwhelming, and it's easy to feel a little lost/depressed/helpless. So I decided to write a series of articles on Designing A Better Tomorrow, looking at how brands can create positive impact. This is the first in the series and focuses on the transformative power of community. I hope you find it reassuring, motivating or at least thought provoking. I wish there was a word in the English language to describe "the joy that comes from building products for customers that operate in the physical world." I've had this pleasure at both Samsara, and now at Lumo. And it truly is such a rush. Here's why. No sacred cows of UX: UX Design should ideally be first-principles driven. Deeply understand the user, and go from there. But often, we find ourselves taking shortcuts by reviewing how competitors or well-established tech companies solve a problem. When you're solving for a user that isn't accustomed to all the tech we take for granted, or a use case where there isn't a direct comparable, you get to bend some rules...and break others. Discovery processes that get you away from your desk: Across my last two roles, I've learned about my customers by riding in an 18-wheeler, visiting a paint distribution center, and more recently, stomping through vineyards. (Photo of the latter below.) It's a really nice change of scene from a corporate setting. Feeling connected to the world around you: There's a lot of demonstrated health benefits of regularly feeling awe. And it is truly an awe-inspiring sensation to learn about a system that you had taken for granted for so long. Do you know what goes into growing the grapes that go in the wine you drink? What about all the complexities of moving food safely from farm to grocery store? Makes you feel like a kid again. What's the best vertical for Research Ops to roll up to? Zapier's Head of UX Research Roy Opata Olende says the best vertical for ReOps often depends on the goals and iteration of ReOps within your particular context. Here are some questions he recommends exploring: ❓What do operations functions look like outside of research? ❓What's the maturity of research within my org? ❓How large is our ReOps team? Just a team of one? Or more? Ultimately, Roy said it's risky when Research Ops is detached and living in a different "home" than within the "research neighborhood." ✅ How do you design (great) products for millions of people? ✅ —— Great short from the interview with Brian Chesky (Co-founder and CEO at Airbnb) for Stanford University Graduate School of Business. “How do you make something for a million people? I don’t know where to start. But if you pick one person, study them, and take their journey, you can actually build something personal. You can design something and keep iterating until they love it. Don’t stop improving it until that person loves it, and you’re not allowed to move to the second person until the first person loves it. Then you get the second person and keep iterating until they love it. And so on…" What happens if you do so? ✅ You design the perfect experience. ✅ People who love your product become your marketing department. Make something people love! It's easy to forget that those millions of customers consist of... individuals. While you can't design something perfect for all of them from scratch, you can start small, keep iterating, and ensure you're not leaving anyone behind.
