There's a lot of talk about new laws and how they affect the restaurant industry, but one law that's existed for a very long time will help restaurant leaders see bigger returns! It's called Miller's Law and it's the key to making choices easier, faster, and more effective with measurable positive results. Miller's Law is well-known in UX circles but is often unknown or disregarded in other disciplines. However, User Experience IS HUMAN EXPERIENCE, meaning it should be considered in every single human interaction moment. The Law states that humans can only handle 5-7 bits of information at any moment. Any more than that, and humans will experience cognitive overload, friction, frustration, and eventually shut down. That's a death sentence for realizing happy guests. By understanding and employing Miller's Law in EVERY part of the guest journey, you can start to see better results and happier guests. Those journeys aren't solely digital though! Every human interaction with a restaurant brand, from the order flow on premise to how new hires are onboarded, can benefit from Miller's Law. It helps make information more receivable and digestible which results in more conversions, whatever a "conversion" means in context. For us, conversions are actual orders, order values, and loyalty subscription and participation. ⛳ Enhancing Trust and Value with Labor Perception Bias At "To the Moon! Design Studio," we improve user experiences by leveraging human psychology, specifically Labor Perception Bias. This principle shows that users trust and value services more when they see the effort involved. While users dislike waiting, their perception changes during high-stakes processes like money transactions, data migrations, or analysis. If these are completed too quickly, skepticism about accuracy arises, eroding trust and value. To counter this, use labor screens—visual indicators of progress. For example, showing a progress bar during a financial transaction reassures users, building trust and enhancing perceived value. Sometimes, slightly extending waiting times ("benevolent deceptions") can make users feel their requests are thoroughly handled. However, it’s vital to follow ethical guidelines: ensure transparency, relevance, and respect for users' time. Examples of labor perception bias in action include Domino's Pizza, which shows steps like "Order placed, Prep, Bake, Quality Check, Delivery" to increase perceived value. Gmail's Schedule Send feature helps users feel that their email took time to craft. Visible restaurant kitchens lead diners to rate food quality higher when they see it being prepared. By applying Labor Perception Bias thoughtfully, you can create more engaging and trustworthy user experiences. At "To the Moon! 🚀 Turning Wait Time into a Positive Experience: Lessons from a Coffee Machine ☕ I typically work out of a coworking space in Nashville called Switchyards, and one of the perks is free coffee. As I work with my team to build out a great experience using FreshAi in the drive-thru, we are constantly looking for ways to improve guest experiences. One thing that stands out in the quick service industry is the importance of speed – it's in the name, after all! Defining the Problem: Customer wait time is a critical factor. However, there's a fascinating insight: what we hate about waiting isn't the wait itself, but the unoccupied time. Disney has mastered this principle in their theme parks by designing ride queues that engage visitors with interactive elements, interesting visuals, and entertaining distractions, making the wait feel shorter and more enjoyable. The coffee machine at Switchyards exemplifies this principle perfectly. What stands out about this experience: ☕ Engaging Wait Time: The machine takes over a minute to brew coffee, which could feel like a long wait. However, it uses fun videos and animations to make the time feel shorter. 🎉 Playfulness and Curiosity: The machine is playful and does a great job of creating curiosity. It’s interesting and pulls me in, building suspense with messages like "You're almost there." ✨ Positive Experience: This coffee machine is a great example of how technology can transform a typically mundane, boring experience into a positive "moment." Principles for Enhancing Wait Times: Engaging Content: Develop captivating content to keep users entertained during wait times. Videos, animations, or interactive elements can make the wait feel shorter and more enjoyable. Suspense and Curiosity: Incorporate elements that build anticipation and curiosity, keeping users engaged and looking forward to the outcome. Messages like "You're almost there" can make the wait more tolerable. Playfulness: Use playful interactions to transform mundane tasks into enjoyable experiences. A touch of humor or fun can significantly enhance user satisfaction and create memorable moments.
