I had an amazing experience at a UX talk last Saturday conducted by Madrasters - Creative Community and was held at Cervello. We delved into the world of AI and how it can be woven into digital products to create seamless and meaningful user experiences. Prashanth Shanmugam, a UX lead at Google for Search + AI, led the session. Prashanth shared five key recommendations for designing digital products with AI, which I found particularly insightful: 1. Assess if AI Adds Value: AI can be costly due to factors like development, hardware, data quality, and integration with existing systems. Product managers, designers, developers, and analysts must collaborate to validate whether adding AI capabilities genuinely benefits the user, rather than integrating AI simply because it's trending. 2. Set the Right Expectations for Users: Clear communication about the capabilities and limitations of AI is crucial. Users should be informed through straightforward communication and user education, setting realistic goals and explaining the capabilities of AI with examples. 3. Be Accountable for Errors: AI outputs depend on the quality of the data it is trained on. Instances of racial bias, inappropriate suggestions, and information misinterpretation can occur. One solution is to provide users the ability to highlight errors through feedback systems, such as rating systems and comment sections. 4. Make It Safe to Explore: AI should be easy to use, encouraging more people to try it and have a positive experience. Clear and straightforward AI builds user trust and confidence, making it accessible to everyone, not just tech experts. Easy-to-use AI maximizes user engagement and provides valuable feedback for improvements. 5. Anchor on Familiarity: AI should feel familiar to users to ease adoption and reduce the learning curve. Familiar interfaces increase user comfort and confidence, leading to a positive experience. Trust is built when AI resembles familiar technology, enhancing acceptance. Seamlessly integrating familiar AI features into daily routines boosts productivity and encourages open engagement. The talk concluded with a quiz on AI fundamentals. It was an insightful session on the factors to consider when integrating AI into digital products. User research is only helpful with clear, actionable steps. We like George Zhang and Yuri Choi's Start, Stop, Continue (SSC) approach. It introduces a simplified, evidence-based approach for product teams to debrief after user research activities such as interviews, evaluations, or user tests. Once your team masters these ideas and learns to analyze data rapidly, we recommend establishing a weekly routine to incorporate this data into your product and marketing planning. You finally got to know, until you do it🤯 Over the past few months, I've been sharing insights about the critical need to define responsabilities for UX and Product Owners (PO) when doing product discoveries, and after rigorous experimentation, I'm thrilled to reveal the outcomes of our efforts a significantly improved collaboration between our UX teams and PM-POs! 🔍 This journey led to the following revelation: some of my initial assumptions about the UX process were inaccurate. It was eye-opening to realize the complex aspects of UX that are essential, especially when we're so focused on cost-saving for our clients. Yes, lean development is our mantra, but understanding user needs shouldn’t be negotiable. 💡 So, how can we balance costs, time efficiency, and timely market entry? We've begun exploring how AI can streamline certain tasks without limiting our creative spirit. This approach promises to enhance our efficiency without compromising on the quality and depth of user insights. I'm excited about this evolving synergy and eager to see how it unfolds further. I had a great time speaking about the future of UX research at the UX360 conference with Nicole Bacchus, Arno Papenheim, and Hamed Yahyaei. So, what's the future of UX research? How can researchers "future proof" their careers? 🤨 Some things we chatted about: 👉 Our "finish line" is farther than ever before – and that's a good thing. Our work has to go far beyond just delivering insights and inspiring our teams. We have to think like product and design strategists and, within the specific context of our organizations, drive product impact ourselves. 👉 As insights professionals, we should be generalists and become fluent in different types of research: qual, quant, market research, experimentation, business metrics, etc. 👉 While we should leverage AI to our advantage, we have to own our craft as an often-messy, people-oriented discipline. Great examples of leveraging AI: shaping discussion guides, writing survey questions, kickstarting synthesis, framing insights, and sprucing up research reports. Thoughts?
