When it comes to the dopamine loop, slot machines are appealing—and can be highly addictive—because we don’t win all the time; we only win some of the time, and we don’t win at regular intervals. This is similar to what makes tech so desirable to our brains—we might get a notification, a new email, or a new like. Walk by a playground or parent pickup spot and take a moment to observe how many of us are staring at our smartphones.
