My new chess story with Joshua Robinson isn’t about the world’s top grandmasters duking it out. It’s about the world’s biggest companies like Google and Goldman Sachs battling in the FIDE World Corporate Chess Championship. The competition pits the cleverest pawn-pushers at some of the richest blue-chip companies on earth against one another. A total of 12 teams are throwing down this weekend, and they’re not vying not for prize money, but to be recognized by chess’s world governing body as the “smartest company in the world.” It turns out that at a time when chess is booming, the ancient game is especially popular in high-achieving offices from Wall Street to Silicon Valley—an internal group of chess players at Google is 2,500 people strong. But, of course, just like corporate softball where it isn’t unusual for teams to show up with someone who arouses suspicion by mashing the ball like Aaron Judge, corporate chess has ringers.
