As the 2024 Florida Legislative Session adjourns, my VyStar Credit Union advocacy team and I are grateful for another year of work with Jordan Elsbury, Adrian Lukis, and Ballard Partners. We also want to thank Christopher T. Hodge, MBA and the League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates for being a great association partner at the Florida Capitol. This year marks a historic milestone for Florida’s credit unions, with the Florida Legislature passing a law to make the Sunshine State one of (soon-to-be) 37 states in which CUs can accept various forms of public sector deposits. What this means for Florida’s credit unions is very simple: we’ll be able to do even more to expand financial inclusion in the places that need it most: low income neighborhoods, rural parts of the state, and others. What it means in the financial services marketplace is also clear: more competition among financial institutions who seek to hold public funds will result in savings to government entities and, ultimately, a better return on taxpayer dollars. It’s a win-win all around, good public policy, and a perfect example of how effective advocacy can simultaneously strengthen the credit union movement as well as the communities in which we all live.
