One of the things I rapidly learnt when stepping up to director (manager of managers), was the need to plan. As a team leader, I could broadly hold what my team and I was doing in my head, and got along that way. With multiple teams, that was no longer an option. However, I was missing one big factor in my thinking: it wasn't just about me. a Gallup study found that employees who strongly agree that they have a clear plan at work are 2.5 times more likely to strongly agree that they are engaged at work. Whether or not I was able to hold the plan and actions in my mind didn't serve my team. Now I don't have a boss to report to, or receive unexpected work requests from. But for my own clarity, and to be memory independent, I still write down my plan. And I've got an accountability partner to check in with to keep me honest around delivery of actions that will really change the dial in my business. DINNER WITH STRANGERS (sort of): Through my organization the Constructors Guild™, I organize monthly dinners that I've coined Moai dinners. Moai being Japanese for "a meeting for the common good". Many times, not always, some or all attendees don't end up knowing each other prior to sitting down for the dinner/event. Although some have confided that it's partly intimidating to them. NONE have shared that that is how they still felt when they left the dinner and discourse. Connecting with people is not a one way street. It involves you embracing your vulnerability and putting yourself out there. If you combine that with a willingness to play full out, and a generosity to share what you have as knowledge, and wisdom. Then the sky is the limit of what you can experience and takeaway at one of our dinners. You get what you put in. This month's dinner is being held this coming Thursday May 30th, 2024 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm.
