What is your WHY? The concept of WHY is a theory developed and well documented by Simon Sinek. I’m almost embarrassed to admit it isn’t one I had come across until participating in the Goldman Sachs #GS10KSB programme last year. The programme got me thinking a lot about my personal and business ‘why’. ‘Start With Why’ is the concept of explaining your purpose and the reason you exist and behave as you do. Delving into this concept allowed me to determine dbstructural Ltd's purpose statement: dbstructural exist to do engineering differently. I will share more on this in future posts. More importantly, it allowed me to determine my own personal why. Why did I go into business, create a company and take on all the highs and lows that are associated with that? The answer to this is ultimately to be a better Dad. I never wanted to be the Dad that was never around, never at home, always working long hours and not seeing my children between weekends. Setting up dbstructural allowed me to take control of this. I will admit that at times it has been a challenge to fulfill this purpose, but most recently I feel like I am winning! Especially today, surprising my Wife and youngest Son at his toddlers football class and seeing his joy light up the room makes it all worthwhile! Kelvin took a leap by enrolling in an executive MBA program at London Business School in 2018. Immersed in a community of influential leaders and invigorating challenges, this experience prepared him to be at new heights of leadership, and also helped him to discover the power of alumni connections. 2)   Prepare yourself for a hypothetic career goal. Early in his journey, Kelvin aimed for the role of COO, driving him to acquire a diverse skill set through various roles. On Friday, December 15, 2023, I graduated from the prestigious Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program with Cohort 36! And with the honor of being chosen to be a Goldman Sachs Ambassador for my cohort. If you know, you know. It's competitive for a reason…the investment Goldman Sachs places in us is beyond what I can capture here. After 15 weeks of perseverance and commitment, even in times when I thought: how am I going to get through this intense, accelerated program that has me rethinking everything every week…I am here to say anything that I say will be an understatement. This wasn't just a professional or personal thing. It became a spiritual thing. I didn't just find an incredible cohort of entrepreneurs like me. I found, as one of my cohorts said, human beings that feel like distant cousins. I wasn't just inspired by former scholars who came to speak, I realized many were already in my community living the promise and goal of this program. To say we had outstanding business advisors, professors and panelists and resources each week with great learnings is small talk. We had leaders that poured into us with full intent to see us succeed (proud to say some were already friends and a Soror!). In my community for life. To say I am leaving with a growth plan that has me excited is an insult. I have all I need in a holistic, dynamic, exponential way that's taking my business to every level of possibility I have imagined, will continue to imagine. If you know you know. I have connection, community, and My experience was invaluable. Anybody that says otherwise….just didn't do it right. It's not meant to be an easy, check the box. It's meant to be a process for a lifetime of growth in economic value, social/community value, and personal value. Stay open, stay curious, stay committed to learning and improving.
