𝙑𝙚𝙡𝙪𝙬𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩: 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚. Opened since 2002, the Veluwemeer aquaduct is a stunning work of architecture and engineering located near Harderwijk, the Netherlands. The bridge is not made up, as tradition, of the passage of cars above the water, but it is the water that passes over a road vehicle underpass. Dutch engineers have chosen to build the water bridge on the N302, a road trafficked by about 28,000 vehicles a day. The Veluwemeer aqueduct naturally does not have a considerable depth, and allows the crossing of small/medium vessels, with a maximum draught of three metres. Do you know how many years modern bridges are designed to use? In recent years, the lifespan of newly constructed bridges has significantly increased due to advancements in engineering technology and materials. Modern bridges are now designed to last up to 100 years, a testament to the progress we've made in this field. Contrastingly, the bridge dismantled in videos often reflect the limitations of past construction techniques and materials, which prevented them from enduring as long. Hopefully that even 100 years from now, their descendants will still be able to use the bridge that is being rebuilt. With current innovations, we can confidently anticipate that the bridges we build today will stand strong and serve their purpose for a century beyond. The truth is that engineering and design are never permanent. Safety standards evolve, and this evolution should not justify "grandfathering in" existing infrastructure. The Baltimore Bridge collapse serves as a stark example. While newer hydro lines were equipped with bumpers to guard against vessel impacts, the bridge itself was never updated with a simple yet crucial upgrade that could have prevented this catastrophe. #baltimorebridge #bridge #collapse #engineering #architecture #engineers #architect
