IWD 2024: Inspire Inclusion - Note 1/7 In the run up to IWD 2024 on March 8, over the next few days, I will be spotlighting messaging out there in the world wide web. Today's spotlight is on the advertisement by Urban Company, which is a slice of life conversation between a UC massage provider and her brother whose friends have implied that his sister's work is unsavoury. The messaging is powerful - all work is good. It's in continuation of UC's existing ad campaign. The notion which is not necessarily limited to the lower middle class, but exists in the dormant shadows across economic strata very often, is that a woman going out to work can be "loose," should not go out at odd timings, not do work which is perceived as taboo is all pervasive. - Sania Mirza shared her perspective on twitter on how after winning 4 grand slams, she was still not perceived as "settled." - I can tell you that my choice to run a business from home was appreciated by so many uncles and aunty's because I was "taking care of the home," whereas the reality was that there was a paucity of jobs aligned to my expectations and qualifications in my city. - My full day housekeeper is uncomfortable with staying even half an hour late in the evening, because her "devrani" (sister-in-law) passes comments on what is she doing at other people's house? These are just a few examples. We need more such messaging for a deep rooted problem. We need also for brands to be more authentic - it's an evolving journey of values vs profits and a topic for another day. What do you think about this campaign? #inclusion #diversity #iwd2024 https://lnkd.in/gNu3EPYC

It's often said that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, but what if we took it a step further? What if instead of merely appreciating beauty, we actively sought to create it wherever we go? This mindset shift can turn mundane surroundings into inspiring havens that reflect our unique personalities. By taking ownership of our environments and injecting them with artistry and care, we not only enhance our own experiences but also uplift those around us. Ultimately, creating beauty is not just about aesthetics; it's about fostering connection, joy, and a sense of belonging in every place we touch. While difficult to definitively define, placemaking is part of everything we do as elected officials.
The term "placemaking" has become ubiquitous in conversations around public spaces, echoing through community meetings, policy discussions, and architectural studios. It has morphed into a buzzword, laden with both promise and skepticism. The definition remains as fluid as the spaces it seeks to transform, begging the question, what does placemaking really mean? Placemaking embodies a multitude of interpretations, from grassroots community engagement to top-down urban renewal initiatives. Many define and embrace it as a means to foster vibrant, inclusive communities, others offer critiques, questioning its ability to truly empower marginalized voices or challenging its susceptibility to co-optation by commercial interests. During Placemaking Week and beyond, we'll embark on a journey to explore what placemaking and placekeeping truly mean for the Neighborhood Design Center. Yet while our internal definition is evolving, we embrace shared placemaking practices. Our community engagement around placemaking remains deeply rooted in place-based interventions that respond to the distinctive needs and aspirations of local neighborhoods. Check out our latest article where our team explores the current state of placemaking. Read the article and comment below how you define placemaking: https://bit.ly/4bFDghh

Today is World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue & Development. Here at Stonegate diversity is very important to us, with it actually being one of our core business values. We actively encourage open dialogue between those of different cultures and backgrounds, helping to develop a workplace of respect and mutual understanding. In addition to open conversation, other great ways to embrace diversity can be: ▪ Learn about traditional celebrations from other cultures ▪ Volunteer with an organization working for diversity and inclusion ▪ Learn another language ▪ Visit an art exhibition or a museum dedicated to other cultures ▪ Learn about another religion What do you do to encourage cultural diversity in the workplace? #worlddayforculturaldiversity #development #workplacediversity
