Green Building certifications play a pivotal role in in driving sustainability initiatives within the built environment and demonstrating performance standards. They serve as a key reference for investors seeking to align their portfolios with #ESG principles, as well as to unlock sustainable finance. As the world’s most widely used green building rating system, the globally-recognised Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council provides a framework for healthy, energy-efficient, and cost-saving green buildings, which offer environmental, social and governance benefits. #DIFC continues to turbo charge sustainability drive with LEED Certifications across multiple buildings! DIFC has been awarded 15 LEED Certifications by the U.S. Green Building Council. The iconic 15-storey DIFC Gate Building, was awarded the prestigious LEED Platinum Certification, the highest rating within the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) framework, recognised for implementing several sustainable strategies including energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, transportation, and human experience. In addition, 14 structures within DIFC including Innovation One, also received LEED Gold certification for excellence in green building practices. Convergence in #GreenBuildings Certification: key focus of the alliance is to emphasize the importance of verification and certification schemes, showcasing how these schemes support Environmental, Social, and Governance (#ESG) reporting. The alliance aims to raise awareness of leading green building rating systems such as #BREEAM, #GreenStar, and #LEED within the real estate and finance sectors. These rating systems have already contributed to the advancement of hundreds of thousands of buildings and projects worldwide toward net-zero and ESG objectives.

The White House and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have released a draft national definition for a zero-emissions building. The definition is intended to serve as a common framework for greater market alignment to move the building sector toward zero emissions. The U.S. Green Building Council announced last Sept. at the Greenbuild International Conference & Expo that LEED v5 will align with the national definition, with LEED Zero Carbon and LEED Platinum incorporating the three core principles. Like LEED, the definition highlights energy efficiency’s critical role as a first step to zero energy emissions by reducing overall building energy needs, in addition to supplying energy from clean sources. Of course, this is only one piece of the decarbonization puzzle. Building emissions come not only from energy usage, but also materials, construction, refrigerants, building-related transportation, water, waste and other impacts. USGBC’s mission is to better define and advance holistic strategies to decarbonize buildings across all these areas. In fact, the LEED v5 for Operations and Maintenance draft features the draft update to LEED Zero Carbon with the core principles above, plus requirements for refrigerant management, embodied carbon in renovations and sustainable transportation. USGBC encourages the green building community to review the definition and provide comments if interested. Super interesting to hear about the current building standards in Scotland, including the mandatory overheating assessment, bans on use of fossil fuels for heating, the use of high performance assemblies, always electric and always a MVHR system with the HebHomes…then the anticipated step change to Passive House, improved airtightness practices onsite and blower door test during construction, closing the performance gap, shifting potentially to triple glazing, simplification of heating systems, the cost effectiveness of solar PV, debate about wood burning stoves as emergency backup heating and the importance of sizing heat pumps…always great see and learn what building standards are used around the world and discovering where we sit in New Zealand and the best way / the change management to improve standards
