A little #historynerd post for you all. Since roughly 1889 the predecessor of the #WMC regulated allopathic physicians. Starting in 1971, the #medical #board began the #regulation of #physician #assistants in #Washington. With the concurrence of the state #Senate yesterday, it appears the WMC will be responsible for regulating its first new profession in 53 years - Certified Anesthesiology Assistants or #CAAs. With the signature of #Governor Inslee, Washington joins 20 other states currently offering this license. Senate Bill 5184 creates the profession of CAAs under the authority of the WMC. The profession works under the direct supervision of #physician #anesthesiologists up to a 4:1 ratio under a practice agreement. This will result in expanded #patient access to care in a physician directed team-based #anesthesia care model that puts patient safety first. WMC will need to complete #rulemaking prior to establishing the license and opening up applications. The license application and practice agreement for CAAs will be completed 100% online.
