Industrial Engineer Randy Timmermans, has the ambition to grow into an expert in the field of production methods and process optimisation, and eventually to lead a continuous improvement team. ''I find myself exactly at the cross-section between engineering and (business) processes. This ensures that I am concerned with understanding both product design, assembly, qualification, and the logistics. Based on these elements, I design and optimise the factory layout to produce as efficiently and effectively as possible. Here, it is important to have both tactical and human insight to initiate change step-by-step. When we are going to improve something, it often means changing things. By ensuring I both know the theory and practice, I make sure the change is supported by all layers of the organisation to minimise the challenge of the change itself. Randy’s background in Industrial Engineering & Management comes in handy when translating products from Design, through protobuilds to Volume-production. ‘’In my current role as an Industrial Engineer, I am involved in this full-time, working on several product groups. The Semicon market is special due to the relatively low production volumes, but high mix and complexity of products. This requires a good understanding of the assembly of the products, and the process design for the production. The organisation is experiencing growth, which means the role of Industrial Engineer is developing rapidly.’’ #werkenbijVDL #hightech #engineering

So many people assume metrology is an “all in” discipline of manufacturing engineering. A daunting prospect of lots of new indirect employees, expensive equipment and production disrupting activities. So much so it just gets ignored, buried as too big a mountain to climb. It can be if you just jump in blindly, or even more dangerously are guided by a false prophet. But when implemented in a way that solves real production issues by assuring measurement data reliability as a first step, it will drive positive process change, pay its own way, and strengthen skills and productivity. Start with your measurement processes as you would in a manufacturing production process, assess the current state and capability, upskill and define improved processes. It shouldn’t always cost lots of money, just a bit of time. Give it a lean group as a project, or a PE/ ME driven project. Shine a light on it. Make a start, learn as you go. There is lots on the internet that can give you the clues, short courses online and face to face courses that’ll make sense of how to apply it. As long as you keep productivity as your aim and an eye on cost vs benefit, the reward will be there.
