The US Department of Energy has launched the application window for the Hydroelectric Production Incentive program. This initiative, a cornerstone of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law championed by the Biden-Harris Administration, aims to revitalize and expand hydroelectric power across the nation. Addressing the pressing need to modernize and sustain hydroelectric facilities, the program seeks to ensure the continuous provision of clean power while prioritizing dam safety and environmental conservation. The announcement came from Maria Robinson, Director of DOE's Grid Deployment Office, during the National Hydropower Association's Waterpower Week. Originating in 2014 and expanded under the current administration, the program has facilitated operations, maintenance, exploration of new small hydropower opportunities, and supported the hydropower workforce. In October 2023, DOE announced that 66 hydroelectric facilities across the country would receive over $36.7 million in incentive payments for electricity generated in calendar years 2021 and 2022. Since 2014, more than $88 million in incentives have been distributed. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dDVt8PP7 #hydropower #hydroelectric #investment

#HydroPower #USA "As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, the Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the selection of 293 hydroelectric improvement projects across 33 states that will receive up to $430 million in incentive payments to upgrade hydropower facilities – in operation for an average of 79 years. ... The 293 projects announced today will: Strengthen grid resilience at hydropower dams by: Replacing or upgrading turbines and generators Upgrading control systems Upgrading cables and transformers Upgrading penstocks, which transport water to the turbines Improve dam safety by upgrading aging dam infrastructure and strengthening existing infrastructure against extreme weather events. The average number of years selected facilities have been in operation is 79 years. Specific examples of projects include: Upgrades to emergency spillways, which channel extra water during heavy rains Concrete replacement to prevent water seepage through the dam Water conveyance repairs to improve how the dam controls water movement Upgrades to gates Upgrades to prevent overtopping of dam walls Erosion repair on the dam and surrounding areas Facilitate environmental and recreational improvements to hydropower infrastructure that will improve water conditions and expand surrounding habitat and passage for fish and other species, and upgrade recreational facilities near dams. For example: Fish passage projects will install fish ladders or other equipment to enable fish and other aquatic species to pass through the dam and/or the turbine. Some projects will also improve or expand the wildlife habitat surrounding the dam. Water quality projects will deploy special turbines that reduce the loss of oxygen in water as it runs through the turbine to generate electricity. Water quality projects might also improve aquatic habitats downstream of the dam, as well as benefit species of conservation concern or cultural significance to Indian Tribes. Recreation projects will establish or maintain recreational facilities and opportunities near the dam, which might include expanding water access for boating; improving access for other recreational activities, such as kayaking and white-water rafting; and enhancing walking trails. These investments also advance the President’s Justice40 Initiative, which sets a goal that 40% of the overall benefits of certain federal climate, clean energy, affordable and sustainable housing, and other investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution. ..."
In America, hydropower is one of the oldest forms of clean energy. The Biden-Harris Administration is keeping the flow of carbon-free electricity going with $430 million for states to upgrade and strengthen hundreds of hydroelectric facilities and retain thousands of jobs nationwide.

Hydropower plays a significant role in the renewable energy landscape, constituting almost 27% of renewable electricity generation in the US. Moreover, it stands out as the primary source, contributing to 93% of all utility-scale energy storage. Despite its crucial role, many hydropower facilities are aging and require essential repairs and upgrades. Big funding announcement! National Hydropower Association applauds the Biden Administration’s pledge of nearly $72 million dollars to improve the efficiency of existing hydroelectric projects facilities across the country. Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that 46 hydroelectric projects in 19 states will receive $71.5 million in incentive payments as part of a program to strengthen the U.S. #hydropower fleet. The investment will generate over 900 MWs of new, carbon-free electricity from the existing fleet, which is equivalent to powering over 280,000 homes per year (roughly the housing stock of Portland, Oregon). The funding is available through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which became law in 2021. “I send my sincere thanks to President Biden, DOE Secretary Granholm, our hydro champions in Congress, and all other stakeholders for helping to secure this critical funding for our industry,” said Malcolm Woolf, NHA’s President and CEO. “A 24/7 reliable, clean energy grid requires the baseload flexibility provided by water power." Batteries for the win! Through the many hiccups we've encountered in our industry lately- some real, some contrived; seeing the Biden administration make the goal to build the backbone of our renewable energy structure heartens me greatly. No energy industry on the planet has made a more impactful impression on the planet as the renewable one. It isn't always as green as we want it to be, but it's a damn sight better than the alternative. https://lnkd.in/e9p7DUVH #renewableenergy #offshorewind #offshorewindenergy
