The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been a cornerstone in ensuring that spaces are not just aesthetically pleasing but also functionally accessible to all individuals, regardless of their physical abilities. We are big fans of designing for *everyone*. This concept of universal design, as advocated by the ADA, emphasizes creating environments that are usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. Universal design principles recognize that the needs of individuals vary widely and that an inclusive approach to design benefits society as a whole. Loved these resources compiled in the link below! 💡 #ADA #accessibility #universaldesign #better #interiordesign #universaldesign PS: Universal design goes beyond mere compliance with regulations; it's about fostering environments that are welcoming and functional for everyone! ♿️

When we consider universal design principles when creating the built environment, we can design both functional and beautiful spaces. These designs improve accessibility for those with physical, cognitive and sensory considerations while not sacrificing beauty or delight. https://lnkd.in/eytBCq2 #Aging #Design #Beauty #Accessibility #Function #Delight

Yesterday was United Nations's International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It is imperative for architects to think about accessibility when designing. The list below highlights some strategies that are frequently used today: Visual impairment ▪ Braille signage ▪ Bright OSHA yellow paint to signify edges of stairs or ramps ▪ Audible cues ▪ Minimizing glare/proper lighting ▪ Lower railing and tactile surfaces to indicate stop Auditory impairment ▪ Optimizing acoustics ▪ Visual alarms Sensory/Autism ▪ Calming color schemes ▪ Quiet spaces Physical Disability ▪ Grab bars and turning space in restrooms ▪ Accessible ramps ▪ Minimal thresholds ▪ Lower heights for counters, outlets, peep holes, and thermostats These strategies are definitely a step in the right direction, and as the article below explains, it is only a start. Inclusive design goes beyond a simple checkbox; it’s a mindset. It’s about creating spaces that are welcoming and usable for everyone, regardless of their abilities, backgrounds, or circumstances. When we embrace diverse perspectives right from the start, we begin shaping a more inclusive world, one building at a time. #InclusiveDesign #Architecture #Design https://lnkd.in/gVSq7mAy

Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a requirement in today’s built environment - but minimum #ADA standards don’t always meet everyone’s needs. Incorporating universal design principles in your #facility and #design allows you to serve the broadest possible range of people while creating welcoming spaces for everyone to enjoy. In a recent article for Buildings magazine, Jensen Hughes’ Joshua Klyber is one of several #accessibility advocates sharing expertise on #UniversalDesign principles and how they create a happier, healthier, and more equitable built environment.
