The Social Equity Committee at Architectural Nexus has created a powerful, open-source toolkit to enhance community involvement in any design project. This toolkit combines elements from ILFI's Equity Petal, the AIA Framework for Equitable Communities, and SEED certification criteria. It provides a comprehensive resource for integrating community engagement and equitable thinking during pre-design and project goal formulation. Register for this presentation hosted by the International Living Future Institute on August 28th and join as Arch Nexus presents this innovative toolkit. Participants will earn 1 AIA LU Elective.

I will be featured in a presentation tomorrow! Please watch! From theory to practice: How DC used participatory design to improve their housing voucher program Date & Time: April 11, 2024 01:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time Description A lot of us have read the textbook on participatory design. But what does it look like to put theory into practice? In 2023, the DC government tried it out in their housing voucher program. They hired five residents—voucher clients—to shape a research plan, co-lead research activities, develop solutions, and prioritize next steps for District leaders. This session is a candid conversation with members of The Lab @ DC (a DC government agency) and the resident researchers hired to co-lead the work. The Lab will discuss the mechanics of hiring, training, and organizing for this process—both what worked and what they’d do differently next time. Resident researchers will share their experience presenting to District leaders and share practical tips on how to take care of yourself when work can be re-traumatizing. Attendees will walk away with guidance on how to put participatory design principles into practice and replicate this model in their jurisdictions. #codeforamerica https://lnkd.in/eztMYtuG

Co-creation is essential in public services as it involves the active participation of citizens in both the design and delivery of services. By engaging users directly, public service providers can design offerings that better meet real needs, fostering stronger legitimacy and trust in public institutions. This collaborative approach enhances service design by incorporating diverse perspectives, leading to more effective and sustainable outcomes that truly benefit communities. But why is it still not common practice for service design in government? One reason is the complexity and inertia within public institutions, which often prioritise established procedures over innovative approaches. Additionally, there is a lack of training and resources to implement co-creation effectively, and sometimes, skepticism about whether it can lead to tangible results. Breaking down these barriers requires a cultural shift toward valuing collaboration and recognising citizens as active partners in the creation of public services. In the paper 'Beyond Co-Production: Value Creation and Public Services', Stephen P. Osborne, Greta Nasi, and Madeline Powell argue that co-production is only one aspect of a broader value creation model in public services. They advocate for a more holistic approach that incorporates insights from public administration and service management, suggesting that the full potential of participatory design is best realised when integrated within a larger ecosystem of value creation. The authors introduce a comprehensive model and holistic approach that redefine how value is co-created in public services, urging professionals to think beyond isolated processes and consider a broader ecosystem. Would you like to learn more about service design in government and how to co-design? Edition 40 of Service Codesign practice and research week-notes. Its been a reasonably positive week, with some catch ups that inspired, and helped forward progress 🎢... Read two great articles that gave inspiration in both research and practice worlds: 🔬Can science on transformation transition science? Lessons from co-design (Susanne Moser, 2016), and 💡The diversity of participatory design research practice (Kim Halscov and Nicolai Hansen, 2015) These articles show the importance of 'meaningful in-depth engagement' and that when done well design can be transformative. Also shows that it is important to focus on at least two aspects: politics, people, context, methods and product/solutions can improve quality of life for beneficiaries.... And now to planning for week 41. Have a good one 🙂 🫱🏻🫲🏻 The Open University #phdlife #designleadership #servicedesign #codesign #designpsychology #designingjustice #pracademia #humancentreddesign #usercentereddesign #universaldesign #inclusivedesign #publicservice
