The following question comes from me, personally. Though I work for an architecture practice and I've been on the Architects Registration Board of NSW for 4 years(as a non architect rep for the property sector: I retire from it at the end of October), the question is mine and mine alone(I speak for myself only and sometimes not even for me!). It is this: Have architects in NSW fully appreciated that the Architects Act of 2003 is about to be repealed and what that might mean for the profession? Have they discussed it and made their views clear to those proposing this change as part of the new holus bolus Building Act: babies, bathwater and all that, come to mind. Sorting out dodgy builders is a noble act with my complete support. I'm just not clear why the Architects Act needs to be repealed to achieve this. Discuss.

Today it was our architect friends' turn to present an interesting topic: hostile architecture. The term "defensive architecture" or "defensive urbanism" describes the planning of public areas or urban features with the intention of discouraging or prohibiting specific undesirable activities, like drug use, vandalism, begging, and providing shelter for the homeless, among other things. Creating uncomfortable public benches or adding armrests to keep people from lying down are a few instances of hostile architecture. - The placement of spikes or spike installations in areas where the homeless may seek safety. - Installing blue LED lighting in public restrooms to deter drug injection. - Scaring away homeless individuals with water sprinklers or loud noises. Despite its attempts to address social issues, hostile architecture is frequently contested since it is thought to further criminalise and isolate the most disadvantaged populations. Some detractors contend that this architecture just moves the problems to other locations without addressing the root causes. 🔔 Attention South Australian Architects 🔔 We’ve recently received significant updates from the South Australian Government and SA HIA regarding the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022. To help you navigate these changes, I’ve just published The Ultimate Guide to Navigating the South Australian National Construction Code (NCC) for Architects. This guide breaks down the most critical updates and exemptions that will affect your projects in the coming years. We have received further clarity regarding some of the more well-known exemptions such as, exemptions relating to the date of both planning and development applications, allotment size and geographical exemptions. But... The newest, biggest and most surprising announcement came on the 2nd of August 2024. "The Malinauskas Labor Government has provided greater certainty to the building and construction industry by ensuring there won’t be any further changes to the National Construction Code (NCC) for the next decade following the implementation of the new standards."
