Protectorate vs. Colony: Control and Autonomy Protectorates and colonies are terms often used in historical and political contexts to describe territories under the control or influence of another, more powerful entity. While both involve a degree of control by an external power, there are key differences between the two concepts. Definitions of Protectorate and Colony A protectorate is a territory that is nominally independent but under the protection of a more powerful state. In contrast, a colony is a territory that is fully controlled and governed by a foreign power. History of Protectorates and Colonies Colonialism and imperialism have been major drivers behind the establishment of both protectorates and colonies. Colonies were often established as part of efforts to expand empires and exploit resources, while protectorates were sometimes created to establish a buffer zone between rival powers or to provide a degree of control over strategic regions. Characteristics of Protectorates Protectorates typically retain a degree of sovereignty, meaning they have some control over their internal affairs. Europe, and by that I mean the colonial forces, are the most brutal and barbarian forces that ever existed. What I mostly regret is that these barbarians are destroying the cradle of civilization (Syria, Iraq, Arabian peninsula, Euphrates, and Tigris). I was always admiring Damascus, but never got there, unfortunately. The city, an urban settlement from 10000 BC; now partially destroyed. Let us try to find a way to create a just and respectful world, that respects civil society and all its norms for any. A country and a nation that dares to reflect on the mistakes it has made, make amends for them, and make them public to the world, instead of choosing to cover up with lies and refuse to admit its mistakes, is enough to show that that nation has a future. At least he is brave and dares to face his own unbearable side. If you look at the history of the United States, you will see the mistakes and stupid things the government has recorded, naked and without even a fig leaf, as well as their reflections. For example, the White House emphasized in an announcement before Columbus Day: "Today we also acknowledge the painful history of mistakes and atrocities committed by many European explorers against tribal and indigenous peoples. One of the criteria for measuring the greatness of a country is whether we deliberately cover up the shameful past and whether we face it honestly. Yes, it depends on whether we bring them to light and whether we do everything we can to deal with them." Sometimes I think about it, the reason why a strong person is strong must have admirable qualities in him. And the reason why the weak are weak is not just because they are bullied by others. Actually, General Washington did outfight the British. He combined conventional and unconventional tactics with effective strategy and logistics, and outfought British and Hessian forces at places like Dorchester Heights, Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, Monmouth, Stony Point, Paulus Hook, Cowpens, Guilford Court House, Yorktown, and others. And yes, effective intelligence and counterintelligence activities often enabled the American victories. Appreciate the National Counterintelligence and Security Center for highlighting this topic! Slavery and the “American Way of War,” 1607–1861 - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gEPibFZC For the two and a half centuries that followed the establishment of England’s first North American colony at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, the practice of slavery and warfare on that continent were inextricably intertwined. The enslavement of Native Americans taken captive in war was a recurrent objective of early military campaigns in the colonies, from New England to the Carolinas. Slave raiding not only provided labor, it served vital strategic functions. It allowed the militarily weak English colonies to cement alliances with powerful Native American confederacies by providing a ready market for their prisoners. Slave raiding was also a form of proxy-war, by which the authority of rival imperial powers was undermined by the enslavement of their native subjects. The relationship between slavery and warfare was, however, a dynamic and contingent one. Slave raiding declined as a characteristic of North American conflict by the early eighteenth century. As racialized plantation societies developed in the southern colonies, enslaved Africans and their descendants supplanted indentured Europeans and Native Americans in the rice and tobacco fields. Yet war and slavery remained intimately bound. The colonies’ own plantation societies proved strategically vulnerable, as runaways and rebels forged alliances with external enemies. Plantation slavery itself took on the characteristics of an “internalwar.” The fundamental insecurities generated by an actually or potentially rebellious enslaved population forged a militarized southern society and shaped America’s early military institutions to a degree that has largely gone unrecognized. America’s “way of war” cannot be understood without reference to slavery. The persistent use of organized military force exemplified by the militia against the enslaved serves to confirm the essential nature of North American slavery as an “internal war.” More broadly, it is just one element in the long and deeply intertwined relationship between slavery and warfare in North America. This began in the earliest days of colonization, as Native Americans seized in war were enslaved in colonial households and plantations or traded within and between colonies. Slave raiding by Native American allies to feed this commerce in captives was a foundation of, in particular, South Carolina’s war making. The business of slave raiding served both to cement alliances with native confederacies and undermine rival colonial powers, through an indirect strategy of attacks on people under their protection. Yet slavery was a strategic “Achilles’ heel” for southern colonies themselves. Fear of enslavement turned the military might of the Yamasee Confederacy against their Carolinian allies in 1715.
