Following up with information from my last post about what items to have onboard your boat before leaving the dock: - Safety Equipment: Life jackets for all passengers A throwable flotation device A fire extinguisher A first aid kit A sound signaling device (e.g., whistle or horn) Visual distress signals (e.g., flares) - Navigation and Communication Devices: A chart plotter linked to GPS A sonar / fish finder A VHF marine radio or cell phone A float plan to share with a family member or friend - Boat Documentation: Registration and documentation papers Insurance information - Tools and Spare Parts: A Basic toolkit - Spare parts specific to the boat (e.g., fuses, filters, bulbs) - Boat Maintenance Items Fuel Engine oil Cleaning supplies Bilge pump and manual bailer  Spare prop(s) - Personal Items: Sunscreen Hats and sunglasses, glasses if needed Water and snacks Towels - Weather Protection: Rain gear Extra clothing By having these items on board before leaving the dock, you can be better prepared for any situation that may arise while out on the water. NFPA 418, STANDARD FOR HELIPORTS, VERTIPORTS AND HELIPADS (2024) This updated standard establishes minimum fire safety requirements for operation at heliports/vertiports and helipads at hospitals, airports, offshore platforms, and tourist attractions. These essential requirements address access points, egress routes, fixed fire protection systems, aircraft refueling equipment, rooftop hangars, portable fire extinguishers, fire alarm systems, and more. In response to a recent shipboard crane casualty, the U.S. Coast Guard issued a Marine Safety Alert regarding inspection and use of wire rope with shipboard cranes. Citing the harsh environment in which these cranes operate, USCG formally recommends owners and operators more frequently and thoroughly inspect crane wires, use pressure lubricating devices, and implement better maintenance tracking. Owners and operators should also consider employing shorter life spans for #crane wires than are recommended by manufacturers to ensure hidden defects are not allowed to fester. Given USCG's strong recommendation of the above, crane operators' failure to review internal policies and implement additional checks and balances could result in an adverse liability finding by #USCG for any future crane-related incidents. If you own or operate shipboard cranes in U.S. #ports, now is the time to review and revise shipboard crane policies to comply with the Marine Safety Alert. Waiting until an incident happens jeopardizes safety of mariners and equipment and risks running afoul of a USCG directorate.
