FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD - Aug 6 The Feast of the Transfiguration is celebrated by various Christian communities in honor of the transfiguration of Jesus. The origins of the feast are less than certain and may have derived from the dedication of three basilicas on Mount Tabor. The feast was present in various forms by the 9th century, and in the Western Church was made a universal feast celebrated on 6 August by Pope Callixtus III to commemorate the raising of the siege of Belgrade (1456). In the Syriac Orthodox, Malankara Orthodox, Revised Julian calendars within Eastern Orthodoxy, Catholic, Old Catholic, and Anglican churches, the Feast of the Transfiguration is observed on 6 August. In the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Feast of the Transfiguration is observed on the fourteenth Sunday after Easter. In some Lutheran traditions preceding the reforms to the liturgy in the 1970s, 6 August was also observed as the Feast of the Transfiguration. In those Orthodox churches which continue to follow the Julian Calendar, 6 August falls on 19 August of the Gregorian Calendar. The Transfiguration is considered a major feast, numbered among the twelve Great Feasts in Byzantine Catholicism and Orthodoxy. In all these churches, if the feast falls on a Sunday, its liturgy is not combined with the Sunday liturgy, but completely replaces it. #catholic #church #feast #transfiguration #divinity #jesus

Full Professor Faculty Philosophy ★ Drawing on the Catholic Tradition to address contemporary ethical issues
Today is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. In this week's interview, Timothy T. O'Donnell, president of Christendom College, discusses the devotion, common objections to it, and the five main papal encyclicals on it. Some of the questions addressed are: What is devotion to the Sacred Heart? Is it rooted in Scripture and the Fathers of the Church? Is it obligatory or optional? Is suited to today's world? https://lnkd.in/dimHFj7S

Catholics worldwide are concerned with the direction the Church Jesus Himself founded is going. Some believe its becoming too liberal and others not liberal or “welcoming” enough. The one thing Catholics need to remember is that Jesus Himself said the “gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” It has survived persecutions, bad popes and efforts of Catholics themselves to destroy it. It is prospering in the third world as it appears to be dying in the secular West. We must continue to pray for Pope Francis and all the representatives of the original 12 apostles. Catholicism is still the greatest hope for restoration of sanity in a world gone mad. “Is the Second Vatican Council receding in the church’s rearview mirror? Has the Francis pontificate raised new and difficult questions about the exercise of papal authority? Is the Roman Church poised to become non-Western? Can popes and bishops teach effectively in a time of rampant individualism and social fragmentation? In short: Quo vadis? We asked five Catholic theologians to reflect on the challenges facing the Catholic Church in these early decades of the twenty-first-century—and to chart a path forward.” —R. R. Reno

Church History (Part 5) 1500 - 1600 AD Church Reforms 1. Moravian Mission Movement In the 16th century, Jan Hus's Moravian Movement and Martin Luther's 95 Theses challenged Catholic doctrines, laying the groundwork for Protestantism. Key translations of the Bible into English and the Puritans' quest to reform the Church of England further fueled the Protestant movement, culminating in the Pilgrims' migration to America. 2. Martin Luther's 95 Theses In 1517, Martin Luther, a German monk, challenged the Catholic Church by writing the 95 Theses, which particularly criticized the sale of indulgences. He introduced key principles that differed from Catholic doctrine: salvation by faith alone, the authority of Scripture alone, Christ as the sole mediator, and grace as the only path to salvation. 3. Rise of the Protestant Movement In 1525, William Tyndale translated the Bible into English. Later, the Geneva Bible and then the King James Version followed, both in English but with differing features. The Puritans, wanting to remove Catholic influences from the Church of England, eventually left for America, becoming known as the Pilgrims.
