This configuration is common in railway track alignment design today, especially when passenger and freight rail operations have to co-exist on the same track (shared use corridor), even if time-separated. This often occurs when new passenger operations are proposed for lines that have been freight-only for many years. The chief obstacle (literally) is the passenger trains need close clearance to the station platform so there's not a wide gap for the passengers to cross when boarding or leaving a train, but the freight trains need wider clearances for their equipment and the occasional oversize cargo; speed, curvature, grade, and superelevation are also considerations. This module shows and discusses track alignments that can resolve this challenge so the requirements of both operations are satisfied.
AREMA TRACK ALIGNMENT DESIGN SEMINAR 1 (TADS 1) TADS 1 will be presented in conjunction with the 2024 AREMA Conference in Louisville, Ky. Gray Chandler will be presenting Module 10, Chambers Station. Gray, CSX Manager -Transportation Projects in the D&C Department Retired, had 36 years service with CSX and is one of the initial authors and presenters of TADS 1. He was appointed to head up and manage Conrail Integration Projects for CSX during the Conrail split. That project presented a wide range of challenges to both design, cost and schedule requiring creative solutions. This module integrates track alignment design with special considerations for passenger platforms. This facility is in a mixed passenger and freight corridor, something we are seeing more often, adding additional complexity.
