While you escape the heat of summer with fans, air conditioning or dips in a pool or lake, your trees could be parched. Oregon's higher average summer temperatures and longer droughts leave soils very dry. This can stunt your trees' growth, make them more susceptible to pests, or cause them to defoliate and die. Don't wait for leaves or needles to wilt - give your trees a good soaking. Once or twice a week for trees 3-5 years after planting and once or twice a month for older trees. That's why ODF's Urban and Community Forestry program supports Oregon Soak It Week the last week in July and August. It's a reminder that almost all trees need some summer water to look and be their best.

As part of its ongoing efforts to help ensure the urban forest is healthy and properly managed for future generations, the City of Tallahassee recently secured a $25,000 Urban and Community Forestry grant from the Florida Forest Service, which the City will match. Tallahassee has one of the highest percentages of tree canopy coverage in the nation at 55 percent. It also has an extremely diverse population of tree species. To help manage this vital asset, the City adopted its Urban Forest Master Plan in 2018 and employs more than 20 certified arborists and tree care professionals who provide care for trees within public rights-of-way, participate in reforestation efforts and help educate residents about proper tree care. Hundreds of trees are planted by the City on residential property each year - free of charge - through its popular Adopt a Tree program. These are some of the reasons that Tallahassee has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree City USA” community for 31 consecutive years. The grant will help fund an updated tree inventory along canopy roads within the Tallahassee city limits, as well as additional trees along publicly maintained streets of several adjoining neighborhoods. The project focuses on updating information previously gathered during the 2014 inventory, which included data about each tree’s species, size, current condition and more. New and updated information will aid in proactive tree management efforts to help ensure the health of community trees. Funding for this project was provided by the USDA Forest Service through the Florida Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program. The Urban and Community Forestry grant program provides financial assistance to local governments, tribal governments, volunteer groups, nonprofit organizations and educational institutions to initiate or enhance local urban and community forestry programs and improve the urban environment within the state of Florida. Awards are made as 50-50 matching grants. Good day, and a happy easter holiday from all at PARKLIFE MONITORING. A good friend & client of ours sent me a text yesterday and asked if I was OK; a little perplexed I texted back and said fine... Why? She said, I normally look forward to your LinkedIn posts and there haven’t been any for a while….. she’s right, I can't deny it. Well here’s the rub….. we have been busy. When I say busy, I mean to say that with the end of several client’s financial years; we have been run ragged getting people/cycle and vehicle counters installed up and down the country, from the tip of Cornwall to the Isle of Arran. What does that mean, well it means we have had a first-quarter like no other; and I mean that in a good way. It also means that we have decided to say goodbye to the quaint ex-gentrified pig barn from whence we started, to new functionally larger premises on an industrial estate; “what can I say we need the space”. What you’re looking at in this photo is a utility ROW that once had over 60 units of Eucalyptus trees directly underneath overhead power lines. The trees were removed, and with proper guidance, replaced with the Southern California native Toyon, Heteromelese arbutifolia. This section of San Diego Gas & Electric ROW is now more reliable and safe. Their customer is satisfied with the continued service of revegetating the land with a species that will soon provide privacy and forever maintain compatibility with the overhead power lines. Last week, while out surveying deer exclosure plots for one of our clients I had a stark reminder of how heavy deer presence/impact can affect a woodland's ability to regenerate. In the photo, on the right (inside the exclosure plot), we can see an abundance of 1st year Beech saplings, while on the left and sadly through the majority of the woodland, almost no saplings where observed. In a changing climate, with increasing pressure from new diseases and shifting social considerations, I feel we should be implementing more Continuous Cover Forestry systems in our woodland. Therefore encouraging natural regeneration to play a vital role in created multi - layered woodlands. However, CCF can not coincide with rising deer populations, with management made difficult, especially in public access woodlands.
