Marjorie's property is a mix of wetlands and forests. When she put the property under easement, 80 percent of the wetlands were thriving, but about five years later they started drying up. The reintroduction of the beavers restored the wetlands. “Now, we have a healthy population of beavers. Half of the wetland is moist, the ponds are thriving. Because beavers build natural fire breaks and create patches of wetland that restore groundwater, they can make landscapes more resistant to fire and drought. WWF&C's vision calls for about 30% of Connecticut's land to be conserved by 2030, as protected woodlands, wildlands and farmlands. Meanwhile, CT Insider reports that the state has fallen short by more than 157,000 acres of its goal to protect 21% of its lands by 2023. Collective efforts remain focused on the 30% target for 2030, though, bolstered by recent land protection wins, a robust five-year state open space acquisition plan and renewed commitment from state agencies and local conservation organizations. The future is looking brighter for the Ohio River! The 981-mile Ohio River and its tributaries are critical resources for communities in the entire Ohio River Basin. Public drinking water, river transportation, commerce, industry, outdoor recreation and tourism. In 2023 American Rivers named the Ohio River among America's most endangered rivers, which means that without taking basin-scale preservation and restoration measures it could fall into the imperiled category. The Ohio River Basin Alliance will hold its annual Day on Capitol Hill, meeting with Members of Congress to educate and advocate for dedicated, permanent federal funding to support the ecological restoration of the Ohio River. Preserving and enhancing the Ohio River's water quality, recreational value and economic vitality is a worthy goal. #ohioriver #ohioriverbasin #ecologicalrestoration

🌲Offering a path forward through Wildlands protection.🌲 This time last year the study, Wildlands in New England: Past, Present, and Future, was released which filled a critical knowledge gap by providing an inventory of the location, characteristics, and protection status of all 1.3 million acres of Wildlands across the six New England states. Created by Wildlands, Woodlands, Farmlands & Communities in collaboration with NEWT, Harvard Forest, and the Highstead Foundation the impact of this report has been a call to action to include Wildlands protection as part of an integrated approach to conservation that also includes forests managed for wood products, natural spaces for recreation and renewal, and farmlands that produce local food — all existing among communities that rely on the health and beauty of the land that they call home. Once such example of integrated Wildlands is Muddy Pond Wilderness Preserve: "The distribution of many newer smaller Wildlands in suburbs and more densely populated areas, such as Muddy Pond Wilderness Preserve in exurban Kingston, Massachusetts, halfway between Boston and New Bedford, represents a growing emphasis on increasing accessibility for broader populations, and achieving Henry David Thoreau’s vision of a natural park in every town. TNC partners with the state of Mississippi to conserve critical landscapes like the Pascagoula river. TNC continues to work daily to conserve and preserve one of the most—if not the most—beautiful states in America. Other recent acquisitions include 2,100 acres along the Leaf and Pascagoula Rivers in the George and Greene County region of the Pascagoula River Basin in 2016, as well as another 1,232 acres along the Pascagoula River in 2018. The 2016 acquisition connected more than 450,000 contiguous acres between the De Soto National Forest and the Pascagoula Wildlife Management Area, making it the largest tract of contiguous protected lands in Mississippi. We have been saving critical habitat through land acquisition, pioneering on-the-ground and in-the-water restoration projects and advocating policies to achieve large-scale conservation in Mississippi. World Wetland Day: Wetlands are vital ecosystems with diverse benefits, safeguarding communities from floods, purifying drinking water, providing food, and offering recreational spaces for outdoor enjoyment. The importance of wetlands is exemplified by their role in environmental resilience, and as awareness grows, there is potential for increased support in conserving and restoring these critical habitats for the well-being of both ecosystems and communities.

Restoration efforts on the Riverby Ranch Mitigation Site in Fannin County, Texas have provided a safe haven for over 200 species of birds, including a variety of grassland species that are currently experiencing steep population declines such as Dickcissels, Bell’s Vireo, and Grasshopper Sparrows. One such species, the Northern Bobwhite, otherwise referred to as “quail” or “bobwhite”, occupies a particularly valuable ecological and economic niche in this region of Texas, acting as an umbrella species for grassland bird communities and as a popular game bird and important source of income for rural communities. In order to determine the efficacy of restoration efforts on the population of bobwhite quail on the ranch, annual spring call counts, as well as various other bird survey methods, have been implemented with this spring count call conducted in May of 2024.
