It's time for my fourth #EJAFellowUpdate. Recently, at Alternatives for Community and Environment, I've been diving into the environmental permits, licenses, and policies associated with a large Boston development. This project has led me to contemplate the interconnectedness of social issues within our communities, particularly concerning environmental justice and affordable housing. This development underscores how addressing complex social challenges requires collaboration between individuals from diverse backgrounds and specialties. "In rewriting the story of who is deserving, as a country we must define what reparations could look like for the lasting effects of the transatlantic slave trade, slavery, and legalized anti-Black policy." Trevor Smith of Liberation Ventures outlines what kind of shifts in cultural, social, and historical narratives are necessary in order to advance the movement for reparations and reparative justice. Sharing an article I co-authored with Deepa Iyer and Ahmad Abuznaid on the importance of movement infrastructure in Nonprofit Quarterly. This captures the work we have been holding with Building Movement Project and the massive infrastructure needs that exist in the BAMEMSA ecosystem. “Coalition building in response to crises is hard work and raises important questions. How do nonprofits and social justice groups move from a reactive position to building long-term power? What do movements need to sustain the energy and motivation of new activists around the nation? The answer is simple: we need movement infrastructure that can support robust rapid-response efforts and long-term power building.”

#WorldDayofSocialJustice World Day of Social Justice is observed annually on the 20th of February, with the objective to raise voices against social injustice and to bring various communities across the world together. This year’s theme is “Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances”. As a nonprofit sector, our work should be centered on improving social justice for the communities we serve. #SocialJusticeFirst #HumanityFirst
