This compact satellite, measuring just 22 x 10 x 33 cm, is equipped with a multispectral instrument that images Earth in 8 different bands. The space sector stands on the cusp of significant change as it moves to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into orbit. A diverse array of startups, established corporations, and national governments are competing to create new chips capable of enduring the extreme conditions of space, thus unleashing AI's full potential. This breakthrough could profoundly transform satellite functionality, data management, and even real-time inter-satellite communication, potentially elevating the space industry's worth to an impressive $1.8 trillion by 2035. Yet, despite swift technological progress on Earth, the space industry continues to battle with antiquated technologies. Present AI applications in space largely depend on transmitting data back to Earth due to insufficient processing capabilities onboard—this approach is not only inefficient but also expensive because of the substantial costs associated with bandwidth. Is it prudent to postpone integrating sophisticated AI into space operations? And, as we advocate for increased autonomy in orbital systems, how can we guarantee the security of these technologies against possible threats from space?
