Are you surprised that Saudia is the 2nd largest in the Gulf after Emirates (and not QR or EY)? Or that Flyadeal is larger than AirArabia among LCCs? That's the underdog effect. If you look at the Top 10 airlines by seats in the Middle East (thanks,ย OAG) for August 2024, you will find some interesting insights. While the perception may be that the "ME Big3" are Emirates, Qatar and Etihad, the reality is different. Saudia is bigger than Qatar Airways thanks to the 11% annual seat growth. Despite Etihad's 30% annual growth, it's outside the top 5! If you combine the growth at flynas and flyadeal, which is 17% and 12%, respectively, you'll see that Saudi Arabia is the fastest-growing aviation market in the region. In fact, Flyadeal is now larger than the traditional LCC leader in the region - Air Arabia. Having lived in the region and worked with most of these airlines in the last 17 years, I know you always need to look under the hood to get the true picture. From Qatar Airways, which became the largest international airline during the pandemic, to helping to start Flyadeal as one of the strongest LCCs today. As these airlines balance their growth with sustainability priorities, it will be interesting to see the paths they take. Did you get any surprising insights from this chart? #airlines #aviation #travel

Qatar Airways Business Class?! This was Qatar Airways business class on their #boeing 777's in 2009. It was a very different airline in 2009. With a fleet size of 67 aircraft & 84 destinations, a medium size airline, but a pale shadow of the current airline in 2024! I remember those days, when selling business class was a challenge - even the 12 seats on the A320/A321 was difficult! A small home market, a limited list of destinations & connectivity made it a challenge. Also Doha International Airport in 2009 had only remote parking stands! The biggest challenge that the airline had on the ground - the airport! So much so that it had to build a completely stand alone premium terminal (which also ran out of space quickly) And let us not forget brand recall as well - Qatar What? Times change! Airlines change too! #aviation #travel #qatarairways
