I'm excited to share our new Viewpoint article in American Chemical Society 's Environmental Science and Technology "The Greatest Opportunity for Green Stormwater Infrastructure Is to Advance Environmental Justice". There are no equations or chemical structures here. We do go through the current science, including existing strengths and weaknesses/threats, but we conclude that "GSI and, more broadly, other nature-based solutions offer possibilities for improving urban hydrologic function and water quality while providing multiple co-benefits; however, we contend the most important benefit is as a tool to advance environmental justice (EJ). Indeed, if these benefits lack intentionality in process and placement to repair past harms, we miss the greatest opportunity of all."  and that "Green infrastructure offers an opportunity to cast a new collective vision, provided that justice is unequivocally tethered to our water quantity and quality aspirations." I hope that this piece can help people think in new ways, challenge current paradigms of thinking, and envision a new inclusive future in stormwater and green infrastructure. In a groundbreaking initiative, researchers from Trinity's School of Engineering have embarked on a mission to transform #wastewater treatment in rural Ireland. Their nature-based solution uses willow trees. Funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland and Leitrim County Council, this endeavour is led by Professors Laurence Gill and John Gallagher. Prof. Laurence Gill said: “Large parts of the country are covered in soils that are unsuitable for the discharge of wastewater from septic tanks serving rural domestic houses that have no main sewer to connect to. This is an area of significant environmental concern in terms of ongoing pollution of both surface water and groundwater resources, and is also blocking many planning applications for rural development. “These full-scale field trials will determine whether willow trees in sealed basins can act as effective zero discharge systems, thereby providing a passive, nature based solution to this growing environmental problem.” Read more about this #TrinityResearch at: https://lnkd.in/e2ntwdHf
