£60 million in funding from the government will be used to help with the skills gap through apprenticeships. This isn't just about filling current roles. I have always been sceptical about the potential for shared apprenticeship/ similar schemes to offer a large-scale answer to under-investment in training by construction businesses. These schemes tend to appeal to policy-makers as a 'common-sense' solution to a problem they don't have/ take the time to understand properly. Like levy transfer/ sharing arrangements (another policy-makers' favourite), they risk distracting attention from other, superior initiatives. I appreciate there are some shared apprenticeship scheme successes (especially in Wales), but to meet the scale of the challenge we probably need to look elsewhere for our main answers.

Pleased to see the government are looking at the apprenticeship levy to see how it could be improved. As well as having a focus on younger people I would really like to see the levy supporting disadvantaged groups into taking up an apprenticeship. The Low Carbon Heating Technician apprenticeship developed by MCS and now being supported by The MCS Foundation provides an excellent way to get into the sector. Buy many employees will find apprenticeships to risky and many potential employers find the salary not high enough. Transferring levies into a Flexi Apprenticeship scheme could help to solve this problem and boost the sector as a whole. #apprenticeships #LCHTA #LowCarbonHeatingTechnicianApprenticeship #sharedapprenticeships #flexiapprenticeships

Apprenticeship funding rule changes can be very positive and welcome, however, when it comes to audit and compliance,colleges and providers are always looking over their shoulder to ensure they are compliant against a given set of funding rules from when an apprentice starts. Sometimes the plethora of changes can add to complexity and confusion amongst providers and employers especially if there are multiple apprentices starting in different funding years.
