Vice President of Global Automotive OEM Business @ Henkel | Creating competitive advantage in a world of future mobility | Innovation | Sustainability | E-mobility | Digitalization
Chemistry vs expertise: what’s more important in a team? According to this article, it’s “the vibe is that drives team success. Always.” For the most part, I’d agree with that HOWEVER... ...in the #AutomotiveIndustry, for many roles, technical knowledge is essential. Manufacturing processes, design, materials science, programming, mechanical and electronic engineering are all disciplines that require deep knowledge. Beyond that, for sure, it’s the human connection and a willingness to actively participate in the growth and success of the team that drive change. We’ve had some challenges over the last 18 months. Much of our success in transforming the business has been down to the trust, mutual respect, collaboration and collective effort outlined here as defining ‘good chemistry.’ That chemistry doesn’t happen just because the ‘right’ people are in the same room (virtual or otherwise). It develops over time as the different elements/people bind, blend and grow. As a leader, it’s exciting to influence that process, guided not always by what is on resumes but sometimes by a gut feeling about: 🎇 Who will be a catalyst to spark ideas? 🎇 Who will be a stabilizer to ground us? 🎇 Who could be a binding agent to connect ideas? The article ends with a suggestion to hire based on chemistry which will result in a redesign of the interview process. Of course, we can always improve but Henkel already does a great job of spotting talent and potential, in part because we place a lot of emphasis on doing what is suggested here: actively searching for people who align with our #culture. At Henkel, we all share a passion for chemistry, and I'm always looking at new ways our team can achieve even greater success so I enjoyed reading this – it definitely sparked some ideas! How important do you think team chemistry is? Is it more important than expertise? #TalentManagement #ChangeManagement #BusinessTransformation #Leadership https://ow.ly/WMRX50RTU3V

Genuinely recommend this organization. If it's "harder" for larger organizations to improve work by respecting humanity, Nestlé Purina North America sure doesn't show it. One of the few companies that I'd truly recommend for your own growth and joy at work. #continuousimprovement #engineering #respecthumanity #improvework #consciousleadership #cpg #manufacturingexcellence #openjobs

The essential elements of a high-performance team are: • A clear understanding of the team’s goals (a defined set of goals and tasks assigned to each individual team member) • A feeling of openness, trust, and communication • Shared decision-making (consensus) • A well-understood problem-solving process • A leader who legitimizes the team-building process ("Mechanical Engineers' Handbook, Manufacturing and Management ( Vol. III")

Early in my career, I had the privilege of joining a regional engineering support hub as an inspection equipment specialist. This role allowed me to collaborate with leading organizations across multiple countries, involving a lot of travel. I was living my dream as a young graduate and making a significant impact, quickly catching the attention of the organization's leadership. One day, I had a chance encounter with our plant manager in the corridor. During our conversation, he said, "Young man, I like the enthusiasm with which you go about your job. Keep it up! But what do you want to achieve in the long term here?" I replied, "I want to be in an executive position." He responded, "That's great, but let me share some advice: in this business, technical specialists rarely reach executive positions. If you're serious about your goal, you need to join the mainstream engineering team, get hands-on experience, and develop your people, team, and leadership skills." Mainstream engineering didn't come with the same prestige. I spent most of my time on the shop floor, working closely with technicians to keep production running. While it wasn’t as glamorous as my previous role, it taught me invaluable people skills and resilience. Eventually, I decided to pivot to the demand function, as I had no aspiration for a role within the supply hierarchy. Looking back, that conversation with the plant manager was some of the best career advice I ever received. Sometimes we become attached to the perks of a specific job, which may not align with our long-term goals. Moving in the right direction can be challenging but ultimately rewarding. There are many things we can excel at, but not all will bring us fulfillment. To everyone reading this, I encourage you to ensure your career ladder is leaning against the right wall—not just the most impressive one. It’s never too late to pursue true fulfillment. You only live once, so invest in the career path that truly satisfies your soul. Have a fruitful week! #rolandoforispeaks #corporatenosyguy #whygoforcrumbs
