Don’t fall victim to breakage! $30 billion of gift cards are purchased each holiday season. But what if you forget to use that gift card you just got for Christmas? Under ASC 606, companies can recognize estimated revenue for services paid for but not used (i.e., breakage). The benefits of this can be massive for companies that sell large amounts of gift cards. In partnership with the California Restaurant Association, please use the link below to send your Assemblymember a quick pre-written note asking them to vote NO on SB 1272. SB 1272 (Laird) faces a big vote in the full Assembly any day now and we need some quick action to amplify our daily lobbying on the ground in the state Capitol. SB 1272 will gut many gift card programs as it requires businesses, upon customer request, to cash out gift cards with a $25 value or less. Not only does this proposal undermine the gift giver’s intent (to provide a restaurant experience to someone), but it also would necessitate having larger amounts of cash on site in order to be ready to comply on any given day with an unknown number of people that may- or may not- request cash from you in exchange for their gift card of $25 or less. How much would you be willing to pay for a £50 gift card? This was the question posed by researchers from Chicago Uni (although they were working in dollars). The card was for a local retailer and had to be used within 2 weeks, so the offers made averaged £26. Similarly, offers for a £100 gift card averaged just under half its value, at £45. But what if you were offered a lottery ticket, with a 50:50 chance of winning either a £50 or £100 gift card? You’d think at the very least, offers would average the same as for the £50 gift card, probably a little more. Nope – the average offered was only £16. Significantly less than people were willing to pay for the guaranteed £50 card, even though the uncertainty was entirely in their favour. In so many of the change programmes if supported (or been on the receiving end of), I’ve seen uncertainty run rife, with the rumour-mill flying into action, and normally reasonable people becoming anything but. So if ever you’re responsible for navigating through a change, whether for yourself or within your organisation, please be aware of uncertainty’s super-power, the destruction of rational decision-making. And do whatever you can to limit its effects. #fastpathways #change

I wonder if Dickens ever considered ending A Christmas Carol with Scrooge handing Bob Cratchit a fist full of gift cards instead of the giant prize turkey... You might scoff at the notion for any number of reasons, least of which might be that the first large scale gift cards weren’t available until the 1990s. The point is, something in the moment is lost when the unexpected gift of kindness becomes a “choose your own adventure” transaction. As an incentive, a gift card does offer an allure of compensation for what is most often a simple action requiring minimal time commitment. However, a branded product of equal value can prove to have as much - or greater - ability to attract attention from a target audience when that product is designed with an understanding for that group’s interests and needs.
