To ensure a #NaturePositive world by 2030, business, society and the planet must look to "sustainable profitability" - companies must optimize the way their business impacts all of society in the long term, explain André Hoffmann and Peter Vanham in their new book The New Nature of Business.
Convener, Nature Positive Initiative; former Director General WWF Int. & CEO BirdLife Int. Focussed on wildlife/nature conservation, business sustainability, inter-species justice Views other than NPrelated are personal
It was exciting to attend the launch of André Hoffmann and @petervanham book #TheNewNatureofBusines making a case for profitability to be also sustainable in the interest of business, economy, society and the planet. Andre’ as both a global business leader and passionate about nature is in a unique position to be speaking of the imperative to contribute to financial, human and natural capitals at once! #naturepositive

President at Enterprise Engagement Alliance | Innovator in stakeholder management and permission-based marketing and sales based on helping rather than selling.
Making the Case for Shareholder Capitalism... When Alex Edmans, the professor of finance at the London Business School and author of “Grow the Pie”, recommends a book on shareholder capitalism, it’s a must-read for me. I share what appears to be his focus on getting at the truth rather than supporting ideologies, which is the heart of the continuous improvement process our organization advocates. Alex helped the Enterprise Engagement Alliance create a formal definition of stakeholder capitalism published in Forbes in 2020: "enhancing returns for investors only by creating value for employees, customers, distribution and supply chain partners, communities and the environment." I must confess though that I will read the book looking for answers to basic questions that led to the creation of the Enterprise Engagement Alliance now 15 years ago--based on decades of research demonstrating the enormous untracked and unnecessary waste involved with believing one can sustainably maximize returns for shareholders by extracting wealth from the people and resources who actually create the wealth--customers and employees supported by distribution and supply chain partners, communities, and the environment. Personally, I am a proud capitalist, so I look forward to reading how the author explains the enormous waste of shareholder capitalism that no one ever seems to seriously measure or address: *The unmeasured impact and daily misery of historically low employee engagement (estimated by Gallup to cost $8.8 trillion a year but what company discloses its own cost of disengagement to investors?). *The daily inconvenience of poor customer service and shoddy products marketed with misleading claims--where is that cost disclosed anywhere? *The blighted landscapes of derelict buildings, pollution and mines left abandoned around the world, etc. for tax payers to clean up, and large communities of people left out of the prosperity many of us enjoy. I look forward to learning how it's possible to maximize shareholder value while making so many customers, employees, and communities miserable for so many decades. #shareholdercapitalism #stakeholdercapitalism #finance #economics #people #humancapital #CX #EX
I endorse very few books, because I only do so if I've read the book. (Some endorse literally hundreds, because no scrutiny is necessary - endorsers bear no consequences if the research behind the book is later found to be flimsy). But David McLean's excellent book on shareholder capitalism is one that I was delighted to endorse. Shareholder capitalism is believed to be one of the big evils of this world. And it's far from perfect; indeed, my own book, Grow the Pie, is often viewed as an alternative to shareholder capitalism. But the concept of shareholder capitalism, and the evidence behind it, are both frequently misunderstood and misportrayed. In this eye-opening book, David explains what shareholder capitalism actually is, and how it can create long-term value for both shareholders and wider society. You may not agree with everything in this book - but that's why you should read it. It’s crazy how one of the biggest compliments you can give a book or article is “That’s exactly what I wanted to say but you said it better”. If that’s the case, you learned nothing from it (other than the art of rhetoric). This book will challenge the way you think and teach you something new. It's based on sound economic principles, not ideology, yet is highly readable (even entertaining at times) and brimming with real-world examples. https://lnkd.in/e3sV7CqT
