💡 Last week, Aperio's Head of MENA Practice Larissa Normanton and Head of Strategic Intelligence Charles Hollis hosted an insightful discussion with Christopher Phillips, International Relations Professor at Queen Mary University of London and author of “Battleground: Ten Conflicts that Explain the New Middle East”. ➡ The event focused on how US-Sino rivalry is impacting the Gulf and the wider #MiddleEast. In particular, the event addressed: ↪ The expansion of #China's footprint in the Middle East and Gulf ↪ Diplomatic engagement ↪ #Geopolitical dynamics ↪ The benefits for Middle Eastern countries ↪ Potential changes in dynamics 📌 Although it has grown substantially in recent years primarily through trade, investment and its energy needs, China's economic presence in the Middle East and Gulf does not yet challenge the dominant role of the #US in terms of military, security and cultural influence, the discussion revealed. 🔎 For the regional states however, their current scope to play both sides is narrowing as the US is forcing #GCC states to choose between either US or Chinese #AI and other advanced technologies.

At Astana Leaders’ Summit, Uzbekistan’s President Highlights Ambitions to Deepen Regional Integration An optimal way of mitigating the challenges Central Asia faces, Mirziyoyev argued, is regional integration. On August 9, Astana hosted the sixth consultative meeting of the heads of state of Central Asia. The documents signed and overall rhetoric of the summit suggest that this meeting is a critical juncture for the integration processes in the region. Unlike the previous consultative meetings, the 2024 Astana summit marks a pivotal moment for Central Asia. For the first time since the establishment of the platform in 2018, the institutionalization of regional processes and integration in Central Asia were in the spotlight. 👉 https://lnkd.in/d2_JJ7zd

„In the last decade, (…), Central Asia has managed to set itself at the heart of an ever-growing, dense network of regional multilateral formats in the wider region of Eurasia. The rise of bilateralism should be seen as the outcome of the growing tendency toward multilateralism. As loosely institutionalised settings, the multilateral formats mentioned above provide a site or “playground” (“ploshadka” as often referred to in Russian) where the sides meet.“ 🇰🇬🇰🇿🇺🇿🇹🇲🇹🇯 What multilateral initiatives have the Central Asian countries taken part in to date? And how can the recent surge of summits, regional formats and other frameworks be explained? Read the entire article by Murad Nasibov here: https://lnkd.in/dW9zfSUQ

✍ In this piece for Pacific Forum, East-West Center Senior Fellow Dr. Denny Roy writes that China has several objectives for Japan: 1️⃣ Tokyo refrains from criticizing China or its policies. 2️⃣ The international community considers Japan perpetually unworthy of regional leadership. 3️⃣ Tokyo acquiesces to all Chinese claims of ownership of disputed territory. 4️⃣ Japan remains militarily weak and neither allied nor aligned with the United States. 5️⃣ Japan provides high technology and expertise to China. 👉 “In each of these criteria, however, Tokyo is moving in the opposite direction of China’s preferences. . . . largely because of Beijing’s own counterproductive behavior.” Read Dr. Roy's article: https://lnkd.in/gNK3n5rF

#APEC #CHINA #AI: Since not meeting since the APEC Summit in Bali last year, initial Biden-Xi vic San Francisco meeting at the Filoli estate in Woodside, CA readouts show no real changes, but some resumption of normal stabilizing exchanges, incl U..S-China mil-to-mil exchanges (which I once was a part of), LE cooperation to combat the Western fentanyl crisis (precursor chems & limiting pill presser tech), expected experts ‘working group’ on #AI risks and/or possible guidelines (NFI), cautioning China on Taiwan election (13 Jan 2024) interference, asking Xi to urge Tehran not to launch proxy attacks on U.S. targets in the ME as the Israel-Hamas conflict continues in Gaza, and likely cautioning Beijing to temper its role vis-à-vis the conflict in Ukraine. Overall, the outcomes appear constructive, aside from a post press conference remark Biden made to the press referring to Xi as a ‘dictator’—[given that] “he runs a Communist country based on a form of government totally different than ours.” #fentanyl #artificialintelligence #Taiwan #Gaza #Ukraine Cite: Reuters: Biden says 'blunt' talks with Xi yield deals on military, fentanyl, AI https://lnkd.in/ewd3nPZP Presser Vid 🎥 Clip: “[We] (the U.S.) will continue to compete vigorously w/[China]—but we’ll manage that competition responsibly, so it doesn’t veer into conflict/accidental conflict.
