Professor Suzanne Verstappen is a Professor of Epidemiology in the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research, School of Biological Sciences 🎓 Her primary research interest is in the longterm outcomes of patients, such as worker productivity loss, functional disability and co-morbidities and its predictors in patients with adult and juvenile onset inflammatory arthritis. She is the PI of several national and international studies investigating the impact of juvenile and adult-onset rheumatic diseases on education and employment. Her second main research intertest is in research into methotrexate therapy in people with adult inflammatory arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. She is the PI of a large national methotrexate study RAMS including patients (~2400 patients) with rheumatoid arthritis commencing methotrexate for the first time. To mark the 50th Anniversary of the Wiley journal, Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, we published a Special Issue on 'Oral Health Inequalities/Inequities' in 2023. The Special Issue was Guest Edited by Professor Luisa Borrell (USA), Dr Anja Heilmann (UK) and Dr Carol Guarnizo-Herreno (Colombia). The issues spans 15 papers including original articles, commentaries, narrative essays and reviews. These papers include work by many of the esteemed authors within the field including; Richard Watt, Georgios Tsakos, Eleanor Fleming, PhD, DDS, MPH, Carlos Quinonez, Ankur Singh, Maha El Tantawi, Eduardo Bernabé, Marco Peres - to name just a few. The Special Issue is led by an excellent Editorial by Sir Michael Marmot. It is such a great honour to have such an important and world-leading health equity advocate writing for the journal, and centring oral health - which is an often neglected aspect of health. A must-read for all academics, researchers, practitioners, and global health specialists working for (oral) health equity. Thanks to the Guest Editors, authors, and peer reviewers for their time and expertise in bringing this important Special Issue to fruition 👏 Link here: https://lnkd.in/eNQP7Nz9

Big milestone alert! 🎉 LEADER Research is thrilled to announce that we’ve enrolled the first 8 patients into the Chronic Urticaria Registry (CURE), a groundbreaking step in advancing our understanding of Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU). Chronic Urticaria affects patients for years, severely impairing their quality of life. Until now, much of its epidemiology, duration, and response to treatment were poorly understood. That’s why the CURE Registry was developed—an academia-driven, open-ended project designed to fill these gaps for all forms of Chronic Urticaria. As a UCARE Centre, LEADER Research is proud to lead the way, pushing the boundaries of research and improving care for our patients. Always advancing, always improving—Always LEADER Research. 💙 #AlwaysLEADERResearch #LEADERResearch #CURERegistry #ChronicUrticaria #CSU #UCARECenter #ClinicalResearch #AdvancingDermatology #AllergyAwareness #ImprovingLives

What do you know about SLE? share your information in the comments Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): Chronic autoimmune disease affecting multiple organ systems. Epidemiology: • Predominantly affects women, especially of childbearing age Pathophysiology: • Autoantibodies target self-antigens, forming immune complexes • Immune complex deposition leads to tissue inflammation and damage Common lab findings include positive antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibodies, and low complement levels. #healthcare #medical #surgery #pharmacy #doctor #mbbs

#EpiTales #1 (Berkson's Bias) Understanding Berkson's Bias in Case-Control Studies: Berkson's bias occurs when there is an overrepresentation of certain exposures in hospitalized control groups, leading to distorted study results. The tale of Dr. Maria and Berkson's fallacy: Dr. Maria is conducting a study to investigate whether NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) use is associated with peptic ulcers. She selects two groups from City Hospital: Cases: Patients with peptic ulcers. Controls: Patients without peptic ulcers. The Exposure Problem Dr. Maria notices that many patients in the hospital, regardless of their primary condition, have multiple health issues. For example, a patient admitted for a minor surgery might also be using NSAIDs for chronic pain management. This results in a higher-than-normal rate of NSAID use in the control group (hospitalized patients without peptic ulcers). The Bias Impact: This overrepresentation of NSAID users in the control group can skew the results. When Dr. Maria calculates the odds ratio (OR) to determine the association between NSAID use and peptic ulcers, the inflated NSAID use among controls makes NSAID use seem less strongly associated with peptic ulcers than it actually is. The Takeaway: Dr. Maria realizes that Berkson's bias, caused by the overrepresentation of NSAID users in the hospital-based control group, distorts the calculated OR. Recognizing and addressing this bias ensures that research accurately reflects true associations. #Stay_curious_and_keep_questioning_the_data #Epidemiology #ResearchBias #CaseControlStudies #HealthcareResearch #PublicHealth

Article Title: Blood Collection for Autologous Blood-Derived Product Preparation: Technique and Application Journal of Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology (JDOE) Acquire Publications Authors: Alan R George Abstract: Background: In periodontics, interest in use of autologous blood-derived products (ABPs) has increased due to demonstrated safety, enhanced initial healing, and for some applications, superior clinical outcomes. Periodontists commonly place peripheral intravenous catheters for moderate sedation, thus encountering opportunities to utilize ABPs routinely. The purpose of this report is to describe a safe blood collection technique for ABP preparation and define typical blood volume requirements for periodontal procedures. Methods: Five cases requiring various amounts of liquid and membrane-formed platelet-rich fibrin are presented. Case 1 involves treatment of an infrabony periodontal defect. Case 2 illustrates alveolar ridge preservation at a maxillary right second premolar site. Case 3 demonstrates repair of a defect related to nasopalatine duct cyst removal. Cases 4 and 5 illustrate the use of PRF in sinus elevation and root coverage, respectively. For full Article visit https://lnkd.in/g6XS9R6c

Join Vascular Neurologist, Dr. Floris Schreuder, as he discusses the epidemiology of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy, outlining its high incidence in older age groups and certain ethnic populations, as well as the significant impact of hypertension. In his talk, Dr. Schreuder also highlights the under representation of non-Western countries in ICH literature and the Global Burden of Disease Stroke Collaboration's efforts to address this gap. Finally, he delves into the risk factors, diagnostic challenges, mortality, morbidity, and recurrence rates associated with ICH and cerebral amyloid angiopathy, emphasising the substantial burden of ICH and its implications for global healthcare. 👇Hit the link below for full access to Dr. Schreuder’s talk as well as a host of others on related topics within The Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection. https://lnkd.in/edBRBrHm
