This photo shows our Summer ’24 lab team “breaking bread” together at a local craft brewery.] What are you working on now that you’re particularly excited about and how will it advance the field? “To advance the field of 'environmental cardiology,’ we need to know what people are exposed to and how much of it. For this, we utilize urinary ‘biomarkers of exposure’ – metabolites of a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and plant-derived monoterpenes (constituents of greenness). We also investigate the mechanism by which exposure to VOCs and/or monoterpenes changes vascular health. We recently investigated how exposure of mice to formaldehyde in E-cig aerosol induced endothelial dysfunction – exciting research! Follow link above for more detail. When you aren’t engaged in scientific research, what are your hobbies, interests, or passions? “As with many scientists, I’m always looking at life through the lens of science, and thus, I do love reading good science (e.g., Stephen J. Gould) and science fiction (e.g., Kurt Vonnegut, Michael Crichton). I also like wood working, pickleball, and, exploring the craft brewery scene (not necessarily in that order… ;^).” What else should ToxSci readers know about you? “I come from a family of 10 children (I’m number 8!), so I’m competitive by necessity, and as a consequence, I truly love a large gathering of “nerdy” people who also enjoy vigorous debate!
