These are the core ideas that Nike started with... kind of like their own special rules for success. They were more than just values – they were principles for how Nike, as a business and the people who work there, should behave and act in their everyday interactions - with each other as employees, customers and partners. These principles were developed way back in 1977 and were written in such a way to help make sure everyone at Nike understood these ideas clearly. Clear communication was prioritised - a down-to-earth style, free of complex jargon and convoluted sentences. No poetic prose. Just plain language for everyone to grasp. The simpler, the better! Nike CEO, I think we have one of the most beautiful, simple and aspirational mission statements that exists. To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete* in the world. Three key words there: inspiration, innovation, athlete. It is Nike's responsibility to inspire the world through sports, athletes and teams and the greatness that they try to achieve every day. It's also our role to create the most innovative, coveted, beautiful, mind-blowing products and stories. Finally, I really love the word “athlete*” with an asterisk. There's a statement behind that asterisk. “If you have a body, you are an athlete.” It came from our co-founder, Bill Bowerman. It challenges us to serve every human being. All 8 billion people are athletes. I believe what makes Nike great is our unrelenting focus on our athletes, the relationship we have with them, and our ability to take their insights to drive innovation, whether it's products or storytelling. Will Elliot Hill get Nike back on its feet? It looks like Nike has not only lost its financial clout, but also its cultural DNA. Why else would you rehire the person who knows that DNA best? Over the course of 2024, Nike’s share price has steadily declined, and recently it has fallen massively due to poor sales forecasts and other problems. Any CEO could have been hired to boost sales. It's a question of positioning. Elliot started as an intern at Nike and held 19 different positions at the company over the course of his career before leaving in 2020 - and now returning as CEO. He is the embodiment of the brand itself and its values. Having such a person at the helm of the company has many positive effects, including in terms of efficiency. With this attitude, Nike could not only achieve a higher level of financial performance, but also grow as a brand by representing the company's mission at the highest level. Winning isn't for everyone. I recently came across Nike's summer campaign, "Winning isn't for everyone." (ya ya - I'm late to the party) Nike's bold statement, "if you don’t want to win, you’ve already lost" captures the essence of a collective of the world’s greatest athletes - all motivated by victory. In a world where the desire to win often garners criticism, Nike's message highlights the grit, determination and sacrifice required to win. It struck a chord with me because I totally agree: winning genuinely isn't for everyone. At MEDDICC, our culture embodies the spirit of winning. We firmly believe that no amount of pizza or ping pong will ever match the unparalleled feeling of winning together as a team. But the journey to winning isn't for everyone - It demands stepping out of our comfort zones, dedicating ourselves to our craft, enduring pressure, and embracing discomfort. Some people may prefer comfort over this pursuit and that's perfectly okay - it doesn't mean they're losing. BUT... Nike's campaign is pretty bold and I think some elements of the campaign truly have missed the mark. The ad's voiceover has lines like "I have no empathy. I'm selfish. I'm irrational. What's yours is mine for the taking" and I truly believe this injects a negative undertone into the concept of winning. Just because you aspire to win doesn't make you devoid of empathy... and I think they've lost a lil bit of brand sentiment with that. In essence, anyone can be a winner if they are willing to do what it takes. It's about a level of commitment and sacrifice that only the most disciplined can achieve.
