A decade deep into the sharing economy, dynamically-priced, marketplace-driven products constitute a massive share of our economy, and our wallets. Despite so much tangible interaction with these services we've outsourced, we often lack the data, the time, and the context to understand how and why services cost what they do, when they do, and where. Check out the power of AnthologyAI data - and the knowledge repository it feeds, in our latest vignette on rideshare pricing....

“London, by comparison, is dominated by the car. And in all cities surveyed its drivers lose the most time to traffic and congestion. By TomTom’s Traffic Index, it’s clear that cities like London need to examine their modal split to reduce vehicular congestion in the city” TomTom 1 bus can take up to 75 cars off the road #busisbest #sustainabletravel 🚌 🚌 🚌

Two separate launches for me this week. One is policy that sets a vision for the future. The other is delivery, which has been shaped by past policy. As the long week comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the importance of both. On Monday, Passenger launched its Discovering Fares capability. This means you can now work out how much a bus journey will cost and buy the right ticket on an app, before catching it. This seemingly straightforward idea is something that lots of research (i.e. Transport Focus), policy (inc. National Bus Strategy) and regulation (Bus Services Act 2017) have been driving towards for some time. Many people don’t catch buses because they can’t work out what it will cost them and don't want a bus full of people staring at them while they work it all out with the driver. And Bus Users UK launched its Manifesto for Bus Services this week. It highlights ten critical areas that the next elected Government must prioritise to realise the potential of bus services as a force for social, environmental and economic good. One of those areas is fairness. The manifesto states, “A simplified fare system across all transport modes would make sustainable travel more affordable, more accessible and more attractive.” It’s critical to raise the importance of fairness and how access to transportation is integral to individual and community quality of life. Whilst simplifying fare systems across all modes might be bold, it’s important to share a vision for how things could be — and to think ‘what if?' With the complexity of bringing fare information into apps, the road can be a long one. But as this week has shown me, determined people can achieve great things. Especially when they know where they’re going. --- Hey AI. It's been quite a week. I need an image for my LinkedIn post. Visualize a (((utopian city))), where the streets are alive with (((people walking))), ((buses)), and (((bicycles))) amidst an abundance of ((greenery)), signifying a thriving public transit system without any visible ((cars)). Rethinking Public Transit 🚍✨ When we talk about public transportation, we often focus on getting people from one place to another. But what if the journey itself could offer something more — something that enhances the overall experience of urban life? 🚍✨ Automated fare collection systems are doing just that. They’re not just a way to pay for a ride; they’re a gateway to a smarter, more connected city. Imagine stepping onto a bus or train, knowing that your fare payment is seamlessly integrated with your city’s infrastructure. Your ride is just one part of a larger system that’s working in harmony to make your life easier. 🚆📲 We’re passionate about this vision. Our technology doesn’t stop at processing payments—it opens the door to endless possibilities. With data-driven insights, cities can predict demand, optimize routes, and even personalize services based on individual needs. For passengers, it means less hassle, more convenience, and a smoother, more reliable transit experience. 📊🚀 But let’s think beyond the practicalities. What if public transport became a way to enhance social equity, offering targeted discounts and benefits to those who need them most? What if it could help reduce environmental impact by encouraging more people to leave their cars at home? 🌍💚 The potential of automated fare collection is vast, and we’re just scratching the surface. As we continue to innovate, we’re not just making public transport more efficient — we’re reimagining how cities can work for everyone. 🌟🚏 #GIS #SmartCities #PublicTransport #Innovation #UrbanMobility #AutomatedFareCollection #Sustainability #FutureOfCities

The transportation industry is experiencing rapid transformation, driven by the rise of app-based ride-hailing services and the evolving demands of urban mobility. In response to these changes, the International Association of Transportation Regulators (IATR) has published its Modernizing Taxi Regulations report (March 2024). This report presents updated regulatory frameworks to guide transportation businesses, especially professional chauffeurs and traditional taxi services, through this shifting landscape. In this article, we will explore the most important insights from the IATR report and highlight why these changes matter for professional chauffeurs and transportation companies. Whether you manage a luxury chauffeur service or a fleet of taxis, staying on top of these trends could lead to greater operational efficiency, new revenue streams, and sustained profitability. I've always been (perhaps oddly) interested in the relationship between subway ridership and the general health of New York City. Millions of people take it every day to get to work, see friends, grab dinner, see a movie - and rightfully so, we've used ridership data pre and post-covid to understand the pulse of the city. BUT, the evolution of ride hailing apps like Uber and Lyft have also had a tremendous impact of moving people around the city and potentially taken some of that burden, so I decided to look at some data from 2019 and 2023: 2019 daily subway ridership: approx. 5.5 million people per day 2023 daily subway ridership: approx. 3.5 million people per day, which is up 60% from 2020 during peak covid. 2019 Taxi trips per day: 966,255 trips per day, of which rideshare apps were over 75% of trips taken. 2023 Taxi trips per day: 752,948 trips per day, of which Uber/Lyft were over 85% of trips taken and a 500% increase from 2020 during peak covid. What does this tell me? Lots of things, but most importantly it indicates that millions and millions of people are still moving around the city every day. We're not quite at the levels we were before 2020, but that makes sense. Working from home (a different topic for a different day) likely the most determinant factor, but the increase in both subway and taxi trips have exponentially increased over the last 3 years, which further confirms the resiliency of NYC. With recent major investments in the subway system (planned at least), and the introduction of congestion pricing in Manhattan, I expect subway ridership to continue to increase. Check out the link below to the data dashboard from data scientist Todd Schneider, who's data I love to check out. https://lnkd.in/e5TKwmUc
