The report showcases examples of effective practices for gender-responsive and disability-inclusive support and care systems. We are all born uniquely. These are the words of Reverend James Bhagwan as we celebrate International Day for Persons with Disabilities 2023. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is annually observed on 3 December to promote the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities and to take action for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and development. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. Overall, the Pacific is far from achieving its targets of the Sustainable Development Goals   by 2030[1] and similar trend globally[2]. With this overall projection and the Pacific struggling to meet its SDG targets, persons with disabilities are sure to be left further behind. 750,000 people with intellectual disabilities must live in segregated “care” institutions with 30 persons or more in one place. 39,000 “live” in psychiatric hospitals. And despite all the deinstitutionalisation talk and projects in the EU "persons with intellectual disabilities and people with complex support needs are most likely to still live in institutional settings." I brought some of these facts and figures into my presentation today for Inclusion International deinstitutionalisation working group. Thank you Guillaume Jacquinot for the invite. I talked about some of the work being done to address these issues, and about what some countries in Europe are doing (not enough). We continue campaigning to end segregation of people with intellectual disabilities, and isolation of their families in Europe. The figures are from Inclusion Europe Inclusion indicators report. To achieve further progress in ensuring the full participation of persons with disabilities, the new and strengthened Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030 will guide the action of Member States as well as EU institutions, building on the achievements of the previous ten years and offering solutions to the challenges ahead. The goal is to ensure that persons with disabilities in Europe, regardless of their sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, age or sexual orientation: 💫 enjoy their human rights, 💫 have equal opportunities, 💫 have equal access to participate in society and economy, 💫 are able to decide where, how and with whom they live, 💫 can move freely in the EU regardless of their support needs, 💫 no longer experience discrimination.

Side Event: The Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Key to High-Quality Development of Accessible and Inclusive Societies 🗓 Wednesday, 26 June 2024 As the Chief of the Development, Economic and Social Issues Branch, I emphasized the pivotal role that the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) plays in fostering accessible and inclusive societies. Here are some key points from my speech: 🔹 Accessibility as a Fundamental Right: Ensuring equal access for persons with disabilities to physical environments, transportation, information, communications, and public services is paramount. 🔹 Inclusive Development: Inclusive development is not just a moral imperative but also a practical necessity for achieving sustainable growth. Embracing diversity and inclusion unlocks a wealth of potential and innovation. 🔹 Economic and Social Benefits: Implementing the CRPD can lead to high-quality development. Inclusive societies benefit from the full participation of all their members, leading to stronger economies and cohesive communities. 🔹 Challenges and Solutions: While acknowledging the challenges in implementing the CRPD, solutions and best practices from various countries successfully integrating the convention into their national frameworks were presented. 🔹 Collaborative Efforts: Increased collaboration between governments, civil society, the private sector, and international organizations is essential to ensure the effective implementation of the CRPD. The commitment to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities and ensuring that development policies and practices are inclusive remains steadfast. Engaging with dedicated individuals and organizations working towards this common goal was truly inspiring.
