3 takeaways from today's study day organized by the Governor of Walloon Brabant Gilles Mahieu with safe.brussels and the Belgische politie - Police belge, the @Federal Judicial Police, Walloon Brabant and Agoria. It was dedicated to combating cyber threats aimed at private and public companies based in Walloon Brabant or Brussels. Given that many of you possess a solid understanding of cybersecurity (or cyber resilience), here are three less known recommendations from CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) and Computer Crime Unit Investigators for handling cyber-attacks: #1. Instead of shutting down servers and computers, simply disconnect them from the network. This is crucial because valuable evidence might still be present in the computer's RAM (Random Access Memory). #2. Document every action taken as soon as the attack is discovered. This documentation is vital for investigators to quickly discern between actions that are legitimate and those that are criminal. #3. If the attack has not yet become public (for instance, no ransom demand has appeared on your screens), it's important to maintain discretion. Doing so helps to avoid alerting the attackers, which could potentially accelerate their malicious activities. 🔉 Spyware vendors behind most zero-days 🔉 Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) revealed that most of the unknown vulnerabilities exploited in the wild were used by commercial spyware vendors (CSVs) to target journalists, activists, and political. Spyware vendors were responsible for 80% of the zero-day vulnerabilities discovered in 2023, with five CSVs responsible for 33 zero-days in the last four years (Cy4Gate, Intellexa, Negg Group, NSO Group, and Variston). 👉 Google urged for more collaboration among governments, stricter guidelines for the use of surveillance technology, and diplomatic efforts with countries hosting non-compliant vendors. #threatintelligence #cti #spyware #zeroday
