The Cheesecake Shop's brand refresh is the sweet surprise I didn’t know I needed 🍰 Did you know that The Cheesecake Shop has been an Australian institution for over 40 years? Yet they've just unveiled a complete brand refresh – a mouth-watering new logo, packaging, uniforms, and store design that's got me craving their creamy confections. This shows that even long-standing brands need to reinvent themselves to stay relevant. As marketers and business leaders, we can't afford to get stale. The key is balancing tradition with innovation. They have balanced their rich heritage with a nostalgic look and feel – all served up with a fresh new colour palette and retro accents. Their new logo, in the shape of a stamp, pairs the iconic green with a new sage tone. It's a delicate balance, but they nailed it! The new branding looks fresh and appetising. Another failed retail name is being resuscitated from the dead: The Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams brand has been acquired by Cartersville, Georgia-based Surya, which will reintroduce the failed brand to interior designers and furniture retailers, according to Surya President Satya Tiwari. No plans have been announced for reopening any of the 24 signature branded shuttered physical stores, but seeing the branded furnishings sold wholesale again to physical stores is a welcomed first step. MG+BW private-label furnishings have previously been sold at some of the biggest names in retail, including RH, Williams-Sonoma, Inc., Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel. Surya acquired the intellectual property, some of the brand’s inventory, and all of its manufacturing equipment. No retail leases. Mitchell Gold himself, the 72-year-old co-founder of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams will serve as a key advisor to Surya in this new chapter of the 34-year brand. Surya will restart manufacturing furniture at the MG+BW factory in Taylorsville, N.C. and begin shipping furniture to retailers early next year. Meanwhile, the bankruptcy court signed off on a plan that would allow customers of the bankrupt furniture company to finally receive the products they purchased but have been sitting at warehouses since the upscale company filed for bankruptcy this past September. While we typically see retailers filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure debt with the hope of emerging as a viable business, this case was converted a month after the initial bankruptcy filing to Chapter 7, a liquidation under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

Have you ever wondered, what's with the number 31 on Baskin Robbins' logo? Here's an interesting story and hidden details on this brand's logo. Baskin-Robbins is an American multinational chain of ice cream and cake specialty shops owned by Inspire Brands. It was started a year after Burt Baskin opened Burton’s Ice Cream Shop in Glendale, California, in 1945. Subsequently, Baskin's brother-in-law, Irv Robbins, opened his ice cream shop in Pasadena. It didn’t take very long for the two to merge their businesses. From there, the name stays as Baskin Robbins. So, what's the deal with the number 31 in their logo? The significance lies in their offering of 31 flavors, theoretically enabling visitors to potentially enjoy a different new flavor each day of the month. At the time, they wanted to brag about it in their logo and on their storefronts as it was rare to offer as many flavors as they did. The number 31 proudly stood out from the name with “31” written above “Baskin Robbins Ice Cream.” Over the years, the logo underwent several transformations. Back in 2006, The logo was then modernized, but it still included the number 31 where the pink portions of the B and R formed the number. However, they remained with the pink and blue color scheme that was first introduced in 1991. In 2022, the logo underwent another makeover but this time the blue color has been swapped with the brown color and the font used is a bit more modern. However, the logo still reflects the important number 31. Although 31 flavors isn’t as breathtaking as it was all those years ago, Baskin Robbins has actually created over 1,000 flavors as of today. Yet, the number 31 remains deeply rooted in the company's identity. If you want to avoid competing on price and stand out from competitors, a rebrand will help to do this. I helped Gibbins Quality Meats to rebrand and change perceptions of the company. - Why they wanted to rebrand: Gibbins were frustrated that they were competing on price. As a result, there was significant pressure on their margin. They had a reputation for quality, built on their 150 year heritage. But overtime this had been diluted, and now too many customers were focused on price. They wanted to change that. - Our approach: Our first step was some research with customers. These conversations gave us firsthand insight into what made Gibbins different from competitors. Our brand strategy was to establish Gibbins’ market position as a premium supplier. The logo we designed captured the company’s heritage, and reflected the quality associated with that. This was reinforced by the illustrations we commissioned, in a traditional wood cut style. Photography gave us another opportunity to establish their “premium” credentials.  - The impact: The new brand identity - and market positioning - helped Gibbins to maintain their margin, in a very competitive market. The company - and the brand - was recently acquired by a competitor. Been thinking a lot about pricing strategy, discounting and value lately. For clients’ products but also for my own consulting services. We’ve all heard the ‘Never discount’ mantra before, and the reasons for it. But today I came across a different framing that I really like, because it is backed by brand purpose rather than (purely) commercial strategy. It comes from slow furniture brand Vitsœ, (who still have Dieter Rams on board as a designer to this day). Vitsœ’s Managing Director Mark Adams said: “We don’t discount. Because the person who didn’t ask for a discount is subsiding the person who did ask for a discount. That’s not truthful; that’s not honest; that’s not respectful.
