Can you Imagine? Disclaimer: I don’t utilize LinkedIn to share my volunteer work, but maybe I should more often. Volunteerism and service to others aren’t just acts of kindness; they foster meaningful connectivity and also serve as a context to utilize our skill set in different ways. So, in my spare time, I am the Director of a non-profit called We Care Bolivia. Essentially, we are seeking to provide college aged orphans and other needy students with the opportunity to change their futures. Once orphans turn 18 and graduate high school in places like Bolivia, they often get lost and forgotten. We are trying to change that, one student at a time. Message me if you want to learn more but the story below is just to encourage you to remember the skill set and experience you bring to the workplace are needed in acts of service and volunteerism too! So, here’s the story… This is one of my most enduring memories in La Paz. I was his last customer of the night. He made my shoes look brand new. But it was time for him to go, back to El Alto, back to whatever family he had. 9 years old, alone at night far from home, working. 😔 The most dangerous part of his day was ahead of him. Watching the bus stops are bigger boys and sometimes men…waiting to steal, waiting to take all that this boy earned. It’s hard to hide a shoe shine box (and therefore the possible money which isn’t much) from preying eyes who know. I don’t know who he is or how he’s doing today, but stories like his are among the reasons I’ll keep going back, and being as generous as I can with a shoe shine price. I go back in a few weeks. Truly going not knowing. Can We Care Bolivia really make a difference? Can we make it possible for orphans and needy children to get a fighting chance at a brighter future? I don’t know, but until I do, I’ll keep trying. You do the same, at whatever it is. Don’t let an uncertain future keep you from doing good today. Just keep trying. Just keep going. BULCS IS A COMMUNITY SUPPORTER, SUPPORTING VICTORIA STATE EMERGENCY SERVICE (SES) VOLUNTEER ASSOCIATION The Victoria State Emergency Service Volunteer Association (VICSESVA or the VA) works to advocate for VICSES volunteers, actively supporting Unit leadership teams and engaging cooperatively with VICSES management and Government. The VA is a non-profit organisation which exists to further the interests of VICSES volunteer members. The VA uses its dedicated focus on volunteers to select and drive the resolution of issues that impact on skills, safety and how VICSES volunteers undertake their duties. It is important to note that the VA is an Association not a Union. Breaking free from the past is almost never easy to do, that is why we are especially fond of our Anti-trafficking project. In collaboration with @International Justice Mission Ghana we get to support survivors have a chance at a better future. Our goal is to support 30 survivors by helping them reintegrate into society and provide them the chance of gaining necessary skills. We provide a chance for a better future by equipping them with life skills--such as sewing, baking, beadmaking, etc. to have a better life trajectory.
