Pure nutty - the wild Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO! In 1989, after a long successful run in the Group B Rally Era and dominating the SCCA Escort Trans-Am Racing Series the previous year, Audi chose to take on a new challenge. They enter the 90 Quattro GTO in the IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) race. The car they sent was special to say the least. It packed a turbocharged 2.2L Inline 5-cylinder making 720 hp. It featured Audi's renowned all-wheel drive system and weighed 2646 pounds (1200kg). The result was a vicious performance that left its mark. Not to mention it might be one of the coolest sounding cars ever made. Audi took second place this season, missing out on the championship by two points. A slow start to the season cost them dearly, but the second half of this season showed how Audi could dial in the car. Winner 5 of their last 7 races. Just not enough to finish the job. A bittersweet ending. However, in 1990 Audi decided to leave IMSA and focus its attention on DTM. WEC. WOW. A new Golden Age of motorsport. WEC Hypercar 2024. What a debut for the Alpine A424, 8th overall in the Qatar 1812km race, and the first of the new 2024 entrants across the line. After nearly 10 hours of flat out racing, the #35 car was just 37 seconds behind Ferrari, winners of Le Mans in 2023. #36 was 12th, the team completing a mind-boggling 665 laps between them. With Alpine, Ferrari, Toyota, Peugeot, Isotto Fraschini, Lamborghini, Porsche, BMW and Cadillac, all fighting for wins this year, the question is; if you are not following the World Endurance Championship this year, why not?! #WEC #alpinecars #lemans24

💭 Looking back on yesterday's FIA World Endurance Championship curtain-raiser (#Qatar1812KM) ⤵️ 🙌 Firstly, what a fantastic race it was! 🇶🇦 It certainly exceeded my expectations, given that the Qatar venue is not linked to particular excitement and the many track limits excursions for a circuit initially designed for bikes. 🔥 Nevertheless, it teased us what this new #Hypercar and #LMGT3 era will bring to us, being the thrills of good (and arguably closer) racing, a plethora of talent especially in the former category, but also the spills – and yes, unfortunately the No.93 #Peugeot lost what could have been a genuine podium spot but it just wasn't to be... 🖼 And a mention to how great-looking the #WEC grid is this year, as nine #Hypercar makes cover a great palette of beautiful machinery. 👀 And yes even nine #LMGT3 makes also excites! I, for one, approve of the maximum two car per manufacturer as it enables for equal representation on-track. 🔄 Tyre management was a key factor during this race, and it was rather novel to see the gravel/marbles on the outside of Turn 9 emerging. This would have been from the LMGT3s, who were able to take on more curbing but kicked up gravel onto the track in the process. 😯 There were a few close calls with those being marginally caught out by what became a finite, single racing line through the corner. ⏳️ Watching and covering a 10-hr race was certainly a little tiring, but in a positive way! 🥇 Porsche Penske mastered the #Rolex24 earlier this year, and have now gained their maiden #WEC win. 😄 Meanwhile the LMGT3 package — as some drivers predicted pre-season with the renowned global use of GT3 cars — has given us some great fights with the use of ABS in comparison to not being in the GTE formula with drivers encouraging some cunning, late-braking manoeuvres. 💪 In fact, over the course of the Prologue, free practice and this season-opener, Porsche works and customer cars were performing strongly, with the exception of a few complaints about vibration issues most definitely related to graining with the tyres. 😳 And a quick word on qualifying... quite frantic and a positive suprise front-row effort from Nyck de Vries in the No. 7 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Europe Hypercar. Hyperpole does work great, though I think the Q1 (Hypercar) and Q2 (LMGT3) sessions should be extended from 12 mins to at least 15 mins. 😔 Meanwhile Isotta Fraschini Milano Fabbrica Automobili had a challenging yet worthy debut, and having to retire wasn't the start they were looking for – though they completed 157 valuable laps for them to build upon with their brand new Le Mans Hypercar. So onwards and upwards (hopefully)! 👏 As ever, well done to those who competed as there were teams who endured a tough race just as others triumphed! 👨💻 Finally, thank you for reading this far – and for following any of our Motorsport Week report coverage in consideration of the prominent #BahrainGP season-opener over in the #F1 world!

New Aston Martin Vantage Gets A Sexy GT3 Racing Twin https://lnkd.in/ehNX8ueb Ahead of revealing its 2024 Formula 1 contender later tonight, Aston Martin has unveiled a new Vantage sports car and this: the new Aston Martin Vantage GT3. This is not a roadgoing alternative to the Porsche 911 GT3; it's a dedicated race car for customer racing in GT3 classes at the FIA World Endurance Championship, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and the Fanatec GT World Challenge, among others. As the first product of a collaboration between Aston Martin Racing and Aston Martin Performance Technologies (AMPT) - which has already collaborated on the Valhalla supercar - it breaks new ground for the automaker, which has seen substantial investment in recent years and a resurgence in motorsport, partially buoyed by its Formula 1 involvement. As Adam Carter, Aston Martin's Head of Endurance Motorsport, explains, "The new GT3 is our first opportunity to use AMPT to play a role in leveraging the capabilities, attitude and methodologies of all of Aston Martin's various nerve centers, which we've then combined with the unrivaled GT program management expertise of AMR."
