Shelters are full of loving dogs waiting for their forever homes, and you can help make a difference! Here are some ways to celebrate and support Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month: 🐶 Adopt a dog: Save a life and give a dog the home they deserve. 📢 Spread the word: Let your friends and family know about the importance of adopting pets. 🤝 Volunteer: Help out at your local shelter. Can you imagine having to choose between a home and your beloved pet? This is the heartbreaking reality for many Canadians. Over 60% of households in Canada have cats or dogs, and more than 70% see them as family members. Sadly, the shortage of pet-friendly housing in our country is a major problem, making many families choose between a home and keeping their companion animals. Many shelters are at capacity, dealing with an influx of surrenders from families facing this reality. From August to September 10, our goal is to raise $10,000 through our Tails of Summer Challenge. URGENT - On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Parachutes for Pets was activated as emergency support for those fleeing the Fort McMurray wildfires with pets. Although most evacuees were headed to the Edmonton area, nonprofits are struggling across Alberta and the pet resources are extremely limited. Within 24 hours Parachutes for Pets had sent multiple loads of pet supplies, and emergency pet packs to Fort Saskatchewan, Edmonton, and Lac La Biche. They had also arranged for over 40 pets in the Edmonton area to have safekeeping and six to receive vet care for wildfire related medical concerns.  Their team has also seen 8 pets arrive to Calgary with their families. They currently have 4 of them in their safekeeping program, and the rest have popped into Parachutes to get the essential supplies they had to leave behind. At a time when their regular need for services has increased, and the prediction of a long, dry summer ahead - they need to humbly ask for support to ensure our efforts can continue.  Can you help? How will you serve in 2024? Here are some ideas for helping your community: reach out to a neighbor in need, perform an act of random kindness, mentor children at your local school, volunteer at a local soup kitchen or food bank, donate blood, or volunteer at the local animal shelter, rescue group, or humane society. When you read the paper, watch the news or scroll on social media,  at some point you will see dogs and cats (young, old, cute, fuzzy, big, small), children and adults facing challenges  - and all of them need help.  In animal rescue there aren’t  enough homes and municipal shelters, especially, are bursting at the seams. For most of them, they’re required to accept “lost” dogs/cats within their jurisdiction. I live in Oklahoma and for some reason, southern states seem to have a bigger problem with pet overpopulation than northern states.  We’re getting closer to a multi-faceted approach (think collective impact). For families it is multi-dimensional.  Diversion centers play a key role and help relys on consistent financial support.  When it all comes together, amazing things happen.  And once you’re a part of that solution, it not only gives you hope - but you find yourself on a mission to share with others. I do know $$$ (or lack thereof) is a key component to access of services, help and ongoing progress. Education is important, but one of the most important pieces is aways $$$$.  It needs to be consistent which today includes end-of-year donations, monthly donations via a check (I write maybe one a month???), purchasing supplies on Amazon shipped to the nonprofit  and then there’s round-ups from Harness Giving ….the new tool in the tool box. Trust me – it takes a complete tool box to maintain momentum and ensure the staff (and volunteers) can do their jobs!!!
