We recently formed the region’s first hospital group with North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and are delighted to reveal our new hospital group identity. We are University Hospitals Tees and we are Caring Better Together. Our two trusts remain as separate organisations- keeping their existing identities- but going forward, we will collectively be known as University Hospitals Tees. Over the last few months, our two organisations have been engaging with staff, patients, and service users to agree on the group name, branding, and strapline – Caring Better Together. This exciting development comes after years of joint working across the two trusts to ensure the best care for our patients and communities across the Tees Valley and beyond. Today, U.S. News & World Report presented its first-ever list of the “Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access” at The State of Equity in America meeting in Washington, DC. As the “global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice,” US News' analysis revealed 53 hospitals across 26 states serving socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Recognition was granted to the institutions that excelled in providing access to high-caliber care, resulting in exceptional patient outcomes. California ranked highest in number of hospitals that made the cut, with 7 recognized institutions, followed by 4 in North Carolina and 3 in Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, and South Carolina. Honing in on US cities with more than 1 hospital included, Baltimore, Detroit, St Louis, Tucson, and Tulsa each had 2 institutions listed. Earlier today, The King's Fund published a report urging the health and care systems in England to shift its focus from hospital care to primary and community care, to "bend the curve on the predicted rise in demand for high-cost, reactive and hospital-based care”. It argues such a shift in focus would enable better preventative care, and improve the experience and quality of care people receive. This is not new, however, as one national leader points out in the report, “We’re a very long way from the digital tools and connectivity that a modern health care system absolutely depends on.” At Metadvice, we help to solve this issue: we provide an innovative and simple to use tool via our software platform which is supporting primary care teams to deliver a more preventative approach to medicine. It does this by prioritising the patients most at risk (who may need e.g. a medication change), ensuring they see the right practitioner, and are given treatment that is personalised to their profile. It's an operational interface for proactive population health management - and already deployed in primacy care settings for CVD high-impact interventions If The King’s Fund’s vision is to become a reality, tools such as this must be part of the equation, especially given limited NHS resources amid an ageing, increasingly unwell population. Interesting letter from the American Hospital Association pushing back on the excellent oped highlighting the challenges of hospital tax-exemption by my colleague and fellow policy researcher Amol S Navathe in the The New York Times. A few observations about the industry letter: -The hospital industry has over used the term "cherry picking." It is a tired term used whenever anyone says something that makes industry look bad. -I don't think that Amol is cherry-picking statistics, the literature on hospital tax-exemption and community benefit is pretty uniform and clear in its direction...and uniformly looks bad for the industry (the debate is the magnitude). -The argument about uncompensated care is much weaker a decade after the ACA has passed which prompted (1) the creation of ACA exchanges and (2) Medicaid expansion -The extreme stress from the COVD-19 pandemic was arguably exacerbated by the administrative staff heavy model of health systems...industry should probably stop using the pandemic argument... (see stories about patients dying alone in the hospital isolated from family) -The industry noted that hospitals provide maternal and prenatal education. With US maternal mortality being (frankly speaking) absolutely terrible is this something that industry really wants to take credit for? -Industry also noted that hospitals provide transportation, housing, and economic opportunities. From a public policy perspective, this is the equivalent of asking SpaceX to design my new reading glasses...maybe not the best allocation of corporate focus and strategic effort. -No mention is made of the hard-working 1,200 tax-paying hospitals that do not benefit from the numerous subsidies that tax-exempt hospitals have. Many tax-paying hospitals are located in rural and poor areas too.
