The revolution of preventive health initiatives in physical fitness, diet and medicine has transformed physical health over the past 50 years, so why are there so few preventive efforts to keep people well mentally? This article is an oldie but goodie that reinforces the importance of developing mental fitness in children before the onset of mental illness happens in adolescence and persists throughout adulthood. Smiling Mind creates targeted, evidence-based programs for children aged 5 to 12 and the adults who surround them—parents and teachers and focuses on promoting skills for mental health and wellbeing and preventing illness. #SmilingMind #Preventivementalhealth #Prevention #MentalFitness

The 2025 Federal Budget has failed our children. The country is in the grips of mental health crisis, yet no funding has been allocated to preventive initiatives targeting primary school-aged children despite evidence that 25 to 50 per cent of adult mental illness can be prevented through early intervention during childhood and adolescence. There is an urgent need to invest in supporting children to learn the skills they need to look after their mental health and wellbeing, before illness prevails.
