There's an ongoing debate! About how patients should receive test results containing bad news. Doctors argue they need the flexibility to review and discuss serious results in person. It's not good that patients unexpectedly receive life-altering news via a patient portal. However, patient advocates and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) say patients can access their data immediately. This allows researching options, seeking second opinions, or preparing for their next appointment. The disagreement stems from a 2016 law promoting patient data access. While exceptions exist, doctors want more ability to delay releasing results to allow compassionate in-person explanations temporarily. Some states have passed laws siding with doctors, but patient groups argue the current rules protect patient autonomy over their medical information. As healthcare digitalizes, this debate explores balancing patient desires with how to effectively and kindly deliver difficult news. What's your view? The MATCH IT Act is a major step forward in the effort to connect patients with their health information. For too long, trust has been eroded in the health system because of patient misidentification. This could not have been done without Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Bill Foster (D-IL), the AHIMA team (Lauren Riplinger, Andrew Tomlinson, Sue Bowman, Caterina DeBarros, and Tara O'Donnell), colleagues including Cassie (Leonard) Ballard, Mari Savickis, David Gray, Tom Leary, MA, CAE, FHIMSS, Karen Sealander, Stuart Chapman, and the whole Patient ID Now Coalition.
