Why do Airlines and GHA's charge to capture airwaybill and house airwaybill data that they require to move their customers freight? If it's cost the surely they should pay the Forwarders who supply the data electronically? Can anyone from the airlines explain why they charge but don't pay?

As of 2:15 p.m. Sunday, there were 304 flights delayed and 59 canceled flights, according to FlightAware. United Airlines and Southwest Airlines were responsible for most of the cancellations and delays. There were 56 United flights canceled and another 81 delayed.

This is concerning. 1) There's already a movement among some airlines to limit overhead space and many are charging for that space. This sounds like a move to ensure that only folks who can afford to pay $50/bag can fly. If I can't take my roller bag that meets specs, too bad? 2) I've had my checked luggage misdirected a number of times. Are airlines going to use these new fees to ensure that doesn't happen? I know that airlines make additional $$ with added fees at a time when they're facing increased costs across the board. However, we've all seen flyers who board with huge bags that can't possibly meet the size/weight standard for overhead storage because they couldn't (or didn't want to) pay an additional fee. And, airlines now routinely request flyers to check their bags at the gate, for FREE. What if - and hear me out - we could load planes faster and more efficiently if airlines STOPPED charging for bags and took more responsibility for getting luggage to its final destination? Many of us would travel without roller carry-ons, the overhead bins wouldn't be overloaded, and most flyers and flight crew would be less cranky. Visualization of data makes it very clear the airlines that are gouging passengers on baggage fees and those that are more customer-centric. "In the last 15 years, airlines have increasingly leaned on baggage charges as an opportunity to cash in. Data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reveals that US airlines raked in a total ~$6.8 billion in baggage fees in 2022, with 2023 figures tracking even higher over the first 9 months of the year —15 years ago, BTS attributed just $1.1 billion to baggage fees. Of course, not all airlines lump costly luggage fees onto customers. Southwest and its famously generous 2-bags-free policy, for example, made just $66m in bag revenue for 2022 from more than 157 million passengers. Meanwhile, "lower cost" carriers like Frontier and Spirit made $745m and $933m, respectively, from less than 65 million passengers between them."
